We will explore three different ways of telling a story—the epic, comic and tragic. We will begin with the greatest epic poem in English, John Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667), a work which changed the way we see the world. We will look at the larger-than-life characterizations of God, Satan, Adam and Eve and the carefully constructed Renaissance cosmos of earth, heaven and hell that they live in. The celebrated comedy we will examine is Richard Sheridan’s brilliant The School for Scandal with its humorous characters Snake and Lady Sneerwell and the dueling brothers Joseph and Charles Surface. That the play served as one of the models for Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen played one of the characters) will come as no surprise, for it is also “light, bright and sparkling.” Our final work will be from the twentieth century master American short story writer Katherine Anne Porter. With imagery reminiscent of the King James Bible, “Noon Wine” brings what Lady Byrd Johnson saw as Greek myths governing people living on a south Texas farm. We will look at the tragic marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, who eventually house the mysterious stranger, Mr. Helton, who brings with him his doomed past. In each narrative structure of epic, comic and tragic, we will discuss the identifying characteristics of each form and apply them to other works students have read.

In terms of pages, the reading is relatively light, but the content is both surprising and challenging, especially when it comes to the Miltonic blank verse, which is so akin, in words to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

The course will be a balance of lecture and discussion, punctuated by clips from videos and by passages being read aloud for close analysis. Discussion questions, as a ballast to the class and the breakout groups, will be supplied for the works.

In Paths to Publishing, authors and small-press publishers Midge Raymond and John Yunker will help you find your way.

You’ll learn about options from traditional publishing to self-publishing and everything in between, and how to choose the path that best fits your goals. With so many options available, you need to understand how each path works to know how to move forward on your publishing journey.

Publishing continues to evolve and remains a mystery to many writers. It can be overwhelming to delve into the business of publishing after being immersed in the art of writing. And, unless you’re familiar with the publishing industry, it can be hard to know how a Big Five imprint differs from a hybrid press or a small press.

Having worked in publishing for more than two decades–in both traditional publishing and as founders of a small press–as well as being on “the other side” as authors, Midge and John understand the ins and outs of the publishing world. They aim to demystify the publishing industry for writers and reduce the stress of dealing with it.

Google is full of advice (some good, some . . . not so much), but it’s easy to fall into the traps of bad contracts, shady agents, or vanity presses that promise the world but don’t deliver. That’s where Paths to Publication comes in—giving you real, reliable guidance from people who’ve been on all sides of the publishing process.

Being educated about how the publishing industry works can solve many issues you might encounter as a writer, whether that’s a bad contract, self-publishing without understanding the costs and/or skills needed, or having unrealistic expectations about publishing. On Sunday, May 4th, 2025 the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Shordie Shordie to the WOW Hall.

In a world inundated with viral moments, the Baltimore rapper Shordie Shordie makes music that people go back to. An albums artist to his core, Shordie sifts through hundreds of songs to meticulously curate projects made to last a lifetime. For his dedicated fans, Shordie’s albums mark years of their lives—even as the years go by, they bring the music with them. Shordie made his first major break with “Bitchuary” (Betchua) in 2018, a now two-times platinum record with over 260 million streams that made him the first Baltimore artist to ever earn a platinum plaque. A master of crooked love songs that pour out in gravely melodies, Shordie has since accrued over 1.5 billion catalog streams. Following up on last year’s critically acclaimed album More Than Music, Pt. 2 and headlining nationwide tour packed with sold out dates, Shordie Shordie is gearing up to release his latest project, A Life for Two.

Growing up, Shordie learned the importance of delivery—often it’s less about what you say, and more about how you say it. He enjoyed the thrill of pushing limits, and found his natural charm always did wonders to talk him off of trouble’s edge. It wasn’t until after high school that he began to channel his boundless energy and bright-eyed charisma into music. In 2015, he formed Peso Da Mafia alongside his brother Lor Dee and their cousin PDM Purp. In part due to Shordie Shordie’s slow burning hook, and in part due to a dance trend inspired by the track, the crew exploded with their 2017 breakout Baltimore anthem “Money Man”. The following year, Shordie Shordie took his songwriting to the next level as he began to put out his first solo music, eventually releasing his debut solo mixtape Captain Hook—a nickname Shordie earned as the irresistible melody man of his former trio—at the close of 2018. Already a megastar in his region, it was only a matter of time before Shordie’s one-of-a-kind sound attracted and enthralled a national audience, captivating listeners from coast to coast.

The project’s closing track, “Bitchuary (Betchua)” quickly took on a life of its own, making history two times over. With “Bitchuary (Betchua)”, Shordie Shordie became the first Baltimore artist to go platinum—and then the first Baltimore artist to go double platinum soon thereafter. With its spacious baseline, crisp claps, false starts, and undeniable bounce, “Bitchuary (Betchua)” was adamantly adopted by the West Coast.

Shordie Shordie and his signature sound quickly found a second home in the region, further cemented when he joined forces with LA phenoms Shoreline Mafia on their 2019 hit “Both Sides” (74M streams). In the coming years, he’d blend seamlessly on collaborations with other West Coast icons such as Drakeo The Ruler, 03 Greedo, Mozzy and more. In April of 2020, Shordie Shordie released his first studio album, >Music (read: More Than Music), debuting at #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and featuring fan favorites like “Save A Little” (65M streams) and “Fucc Friends” (48M streams) Like Captain Hook, >Music contains zero features—just Shordie himself on full display—a fitting choice for such a personal record. A true pandemic album, these 13 tracks of Shordie’s croaking sing-raps, twisting turning melodies, and emotional transparency kept his dedicated audience company through months of isolation and uncertainty, as listeners tucked into the project time and time again. Shordie has always pushed the line between rapping and singing, but on his 2021 album Memory Lane, a joint project with Murda Beatz, he began leaning further into his R&B, and at points even pop, sensibilities.

In the summer of 2022, he released More Than Music, Pt. 2, following up on a project held near and dear to fans’ hearts and showcasing his growth—as both an artist and individual—in the two years since its release. Shordie flies high on uptempo tracks like “Body Language”, which sounds like it was ready-made for the heyday of radio, but leaves room for his words to resonate on bluer ballads like “Is It True”, which stands a true testament to Shordie’s writing as he croons both perspectives of a conversation between two lovers at the beginning of the end, right as the distance begins to creep in. Released right after the pandemic kicked off, Shordie Shordie was never able to perform >Music. In a full circle moment, More Than Music, Pt. 2 dropped just as he embarked in his first ever headlining nationwide tour.

Many struggle in their efforts to categorize Shordie’s irreplicable sound. He’s a Baltimore artist to his core, yet his career took off on the West Coast. Shordie proved throughout his On The Block Tour that his impact is limited to neither region, selling out shows on each coast and everywhere in between and performing for packed out rooms that belt out every single word with him. Shordie has always left everything on the track, working through complicated feelings in real the beat moves through him—whether contemplating soaring infatuation or a resulting heartbreak, he brings his listeners along for the ride. As described by the Baltimore Banner, Shordie’s “one-of-one vocal timbre” automatically puts him in a league of his own; but his “intentional development of songwriting will further distinguish him from the pack.” Next month, Shordie Shordie is set to release his latest project, A Life For Two, inspired by a real life Romeo and Juliet saga. THE MOSS

In a musical landscape with fewer boundaries than ever before, THE MOSS’s exuberant brand of alternative rock spans genres, eras, and even oceans.

The Utah-via-Hawaii group was born on the shores of Oahu in 2015, as teenage buddies Tyke James (vocals/guitar) and Addison Sharp (guitar) picked up a gig serenading diners at local taco trucks in between surf sessions. Naturally, their songs took shape in the spirit of the island, imbued with the joyfulness and breeziness of reggae culture yet cut with the introspection and communal spirit of mainland indie acts like Pinegrove and Cage the Elephant.

By 2018, the duo had grown, enlisting Willie Fowler on drums and Addison’s brother Brierton on bass, and traded in beaches for the Great Salt Lake. They hit the stage at spots like local cornerstone Kilby Court, live-testing their modern-indie-meets-’60s-blues with a wide-eyed exuberance that translated effortlessly into their 2019 self-released debut, Bryology.

Colored by the sound of Stratocasters jamming through reverb-cranked Fender amps, all backed by bouncy rhythms, Bryology marked a big step for the still-young quartet – but, true to The Moss’s nature, was still hard-coded with a DIY ethos. “We basically had no budget,” James remembers fondly. “We bought some nice mics and an interface and I ended up learning how to mix while we were recording.”

The follow-up, 2021’s Kentucky Derby, brought a more aspirational, blue-sky tilt to the foundation they’d laid on Bryology, expanding the group’s sonic arsenal while keeping the relatable lyrical style and sun-soaked sentiment at the forefront. “I’m really proud of how we’ve evolved as a band over time,” Addison Sharp says. “It feels like we’ve taken every different influence and mashed them all together to create something that feels really special.”

“Bryology seemed like a collection of separate songs we put together to make an album, whereas Kentucky Derby is a similar thought and story coming together to collectively make a more cohesive album,” adds Brierton Sharp says, noting the album’s tracks are sneakily arranged in pairs of two that seamlessly flow into one another. “Each song could be listened to on its own, or you could listen to them all and get a broader sense of our intention.”

No matter how listeners choose to interact with The Moss’s music, the band just hopes they feel something. Establishing standard work begins with process operators creating, clarifying, and sharing information about the most efficient method to perform a task that is currently known with everyone performing that process. From there, you can perform waste analysis and highlight areas of opportunity. Learn how standard work fits into LEAN, and how you cPrinan apply different LEAN tools to develop standard work in your organization as a baseline for improvement.

The Buffalo-bred, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Marc Scibilia makes soulful music on his own terms, channeling the national mood. Finding inspiration in folk, country, alternative, and anthemic pop music, he has crafted a distinctly American sound that is rueful yet buoyed by hope. From his Gold-certified single ‘Unforgettable,’ which garnered over 100m streams and was a #1 radio hit in Germany, to his nostalgic viral single ‘Summer Clothes,’ Marc continues to take his listeners on a musical journey that crosses genres and knows no bounds.

Marc’s latest album release, More to This, showcases his breadth of writing, musicality, and production talent. What started a year ago as creative experimentation from his East Nashville studio, turned into an incredible burst of original songs and mashups. The focus track, “MoretoThis”, had an immediate emotional connection racking up 50 million views and over 10 million streams.

On Friday, May 9th the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Too Many Zooz to the WOW Hall.

Self-described “Brass House” trio Too Many Zooz make manically kinetic instrumental music that combines avant-garde jazz, EDM, punk rock, and sundry other traditions into their own distinctive brand of high-energy dance music. A viral sensation since they first emerged as New York subway buskers in 2013, Too Many Zooz have evolved into a globally recognized phenomenon who tour often and produce YouTube videos that have garnered millions of views. Formed in 2013 in New York City, Too Many Zooz features the talents of baritone saxophonist Leo “Leo P” Pellegrino, trumpeter Matt “Doe” Muirhead, and drummer David “King of Sludge” Parks. Pellegrino and Muirhead initially met while students at the Manhattan School of Music where they studied jazz. They eventually joined forces with percussionist Parks, whom Pellegrino had played with in a separate busking outfit. They began playing live at various New York subway stations and quickly attracted crowds with their aggressive instrumental sound and Pellegrino’s ability to dance and hype the audience like a DJ while playing.

In 2014, a video of the band went viral and helped set the stage for the group’s meteoric rise. In 2016, the trio released their debut full-length album, Subway Gawdz, which featured guest spots from Kreayshawn, Armani White, members of Galactic, and Beats Antique. That same year they were featured on Beyonce’s Lemonade album, and performed with Beyonce and The Dixie Chicks at the CMA’s. Over the course of the next several years, Too Many Zooz continued to release EP’s and singles – including ZombiEP (2019), a concept album about a fictional
band playing a music festival during a zombie outbreak, plus collaborations and remixes with The Floozies, Beats Antique, Spencer Ludwig, Moon Hooch, Dot Cromwell, Nitty Scott, Lester London, and RoRo. All of that set the stage for the band’s 2024 sophomore album Retail Therapy – a 13-song chronicle of auditory subway cinema that features appearances from
Moon Hooch, Thumpasaurus, Lucky Chops, and Too Many T’s.

Join Soromundi's 35th Anniversary concert, "Everything Possible", for an exciting trip through a rich variety of music and styles.
Soromundi's 90-member chorus will feature a Reunion Chorus of 40 former members that will fill the stage with 130 voices singing in harmony! Wow! The first half will feature songs the chorus has sung over the past 35 years. The second half will be music that represents today and the future. Don't want to give it all away, but the concert will start with "Price Tag'. That will get the audience moving! Other popular songs will include "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Where is the Love" by the Black-Eyed Peas, and the title song "Everything Possible". Some of the songs will include a string quintet, a guitar group, native drummers, recorder, and our resident drummer.
In addition to the concert, all ticket holders will be able to view a History Exhibit located in Jacob's Community Room, titled "Artists, Activists, & Allies". The exhibit tells the story of Soromundi's past 35 seasons. The exhibit will open each concert date 90 minutes prior to the concert and close 30 minutes before curtain.

Sarina Dorie (she/her) Sarina Dorie has sold more than 200 short stories to magazines, won humor and romance awards, sold three novels traditionally to publishers, and self-published over 100 novels. She has experience with mystery, fantasy, science fiction, horror, young adult, humor and romance.

Sarina Dorie used to work at a digital advertising agency as a copywriter and editor and wrote synopses daily. She now helps clients craft their own blurb and synopsis—and uses this skill for her own writing.

On Your Barks, Get Set, Go! Alton Baker Park goes to the dogs on Sunday May 18th, when over 1,000 dogs and their people leash up for a 10K, 5K, or 2K run/walk in the park for Greenhill Humane Society's 32nd Annual Bark in the Park. Festivities include the runs and walk, canine activities, vendor booths, food trucks, demonstrations, contests, prizes and more. This annual event draws more than 1,000 people and their pets in celebration of the human-animal bond. Bark in the Park is the largest pet event in the Southern Willamette Valley and one of the largest run/walks in Eugene. Runners can participate as an individual with or without a dog and start or join a team. Plus, your dog is invited and kids 12 and under register free! Fundraise for the animals! This year the shelter hopes to raise $100,000 to help care for over 5,500 animals in 2025.

A Eugene Opera favorite returns to share his voice with our patrons for just one evening. Lawrence Barasa Kiharangwa, (Nairobi, Kenya), began his musical training as a member of The Kenyan Boys Choir, where he performed with artists including The Tenors, Jonas Brothers, Nelly Furtado, Ellie Goulding, Ciara, and Demi Lovato, among others. A graduate of the University of Oregon, Lawrence performed Spoletta in Eugene Opera's production of "Tosca" and Don Basilio with Astoria Music Festivals "Le nozze di Figaro". In addition, he has performed the title role in "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" and Don José in "La Tragedy de Carmen" at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance. Lawrence has launched into the world of opera, appearing at Maryland Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and Pensacola Opera. We welcome him back for one evening of incredible music.

This month, we'll learn more about backyard habitats with Barb Bryson, Director of Habitat Haven. Habitat Haven is a backyard habitat certification program that began in May 2024. Supported by grants from Upper Willamette Soil and Water District, the program has attracted over 70 participants and is growing. She will discuss the rationale behind this program, its components and how it works. We will look at examples of yards in our area that have been certified at various levels.

About the Presenter: Barb grew up in southeast Eugene, playing in the forest pools and climbing tall Douglas fir trees, which led years later to a degree in Biology. After many moons raising children and working as a Nurse Practitioner, she returned to bird watching in the pandemic, read Douglas Tallamy’s book “Nature’s Best Hope” and realized her traditional gardening choices needed to change. She joined the board of Lane Audubon a couple of years ago. Gardening for birds and nature, not just for beauty, has become a passion.

While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box.

ISRAEL VIBRATION

Mention the name ISRAEL VIBRATION in reggae music circles and watch the warmth of recognition and appreciation of those who recognize this very special vocal group. The positive vibrations emanating from the music of ISRAEL VIBRATION have been spellbinding audiences, critics and DJs for over three decades. The lead vocalists cast a harmonious musical spell, weaving traditional roots reggae with a mesmerizing sound and deeply spiritual message. ISRAEL VIBRATION have been touring very strong worldwide for many years. They are regularly featured internationally on most of the major Reggae Festivals.

A living lesson in fortitude, the vocal trio of Cecil “Skeley” Spence, Albert “Apple Gabriel” Craig, and Lascelle “Wiss” Bulgin overcame adversity, illness, and poverty to become one of the finest roots groups in Jamaica’s history. All three had been afflicted by polio and first became acquainted, albeit briefly, at Kingston’s Mona Rehabilitation Clinic.

Of the trio, Bulgin appeared least likely to emerge a singing sensation. He spent much of his childhood at a variety of rehabilitation centers and in his teens began working for a tailor. Craig, in contrast, initially did seem destined for a musical career and for a while attended the famed Alpha Cottage School. This illustrious institution, founded in 1880 and run by Catholic nuns, is renowned for its musical training. Many of the island’s greatest stars passed through its doors, including members of the Skatalites and drummer Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace. However, Craig found the tough discipline and rigid atmosphere oppressive and ran away at 14 into a life of homelessness and poverty. After an equally bright start, Spence’s life also took a severe downturn. As a preteen, he played xylophone in a youth band, with whom he appeared on national television. Although physically disabled, he was a gifted athlete and in his teens he was selected for the Jamaican Wheelchair Basketball team. But his conversion to Rastafarianism put an end to all that in 1969; he was dropped from the team and returned to Kingston. It was serendipity that he bumped into Craig soon after, and fate intervened again, to bring the pair back into touch with Bulgin.

The three teens had individually all previously converted to rastafarianism, now their shared faith and childhood experiences helped forge a strong friendship. Leaving behind their old lives, the trio now spent their time hanging out together and busking for money around Kingston. They spent the next six years singing for their suppers and by 1975, Israel Vibration was a vocal force to be reckoned with. However, their initial attempt at recording was abortive as the one track they did cut, the Ernest Hookim-produced “Bad Intention,” never saw release. The following year, an answer to their prayers arrived when members of the Rastafarian religious group the Twelve Tribes of Israel agreed to finance a single by the trio.

Israel Vibration went into Treasure Isle studio with producer U- Booth and recorded the single “Why Worry” and a new version of “Bad Intention” for its flip. The group’s exquisite dread sound and militant cultural themes made an instant impression and the trio now found themselves on-stage opening for the likes of Bob Marley and Dennis Brown. In 1977, Israel Vibration began work on their follow-up, “The Same Song,” with producer Tommy Cowan. By the time they were done, the group had another hit song and a debut album of stunning proportions, which was titled after the single. A de rigueur dub version, Israel Tafari, accompanied the full-length and was equally powerful. On the strength of these, the trio was signed to the British EMI subsidiary Harvest, who released Same Song in Britain. 1979 brought the Unconquering People album, and another popular single, “Crisis.” And even if this set was not quite as dread as its predecessor, tracks like “Mr. Taxman” and “We a de Rasta” remain classics of cultural roots. Not surprisingly, Israel Vibration went down a storm at that year’s Reggae Sunsplash.

The trio’s deeply devotional songs, cultural themes, inspirational lyrics, and original take on the roots style had struck a chord with reggae fans around the world. Thus, it was a surprising decision that Israel Vibration recorded their next album, 1981’s Why You So Craven, with legendary dancehall producer Junjo Lawes. In many ways, it was a failed venture and the trio was so dissatisfied, they walked out before the sessions were complete. Bringing in the vocal trio the Tamlins, Lawes carried on without them and the resulting album, while not a total disaster, certainly lacked the spirit of its predecessors. Even an avid response at 1982’s Reggae Sunsplash could not convince the trio that their future lay in a Jamaica where dancehall now reigned supreme (Live at Reggae Sunsplash, a split album from Israel Vibrations and the Gladiators, bears witness to their performance). Thus they relocated to New York City, perhaps believing that the large immigrant community could sustain them, or that America was now ready to embrace roots. They were wrong on both counts. A few occasional live appearances aside, the group swiftly disappeared from view. All three attempted solo careers, but only Bulgin made it on to record; his Mr. Sunshine album paired him with the Freedom Fighters Band.

In 1987, the trio decided it was stronger together than apart, re-formed, and approached the RAS label. Although labelhead Doctor Dread had shown no interest in their solo efforts, he was enthusiastic about a reunion and quickly signed them to RAS. Strength of My Life appeared the following year, and aided by the Roots Radics, it found Israel Vibration as vibrant as ever.

The trio now settled down for the long haul, and although their sound was no longer on the scene’s cutting edge, they continued putting out strong sets. 1990 brought three albums, Praises, its dub companion Dub Vibration, and Israel Dub, drawn from the Strength of My Life set. The next year’s Forever found the trio in a surprisingly comic mood, taking aim at themselves, dancehall, as well as contemporary issues. In 1992, a taste of the Vibrations’ live power was delivered up on Vibes Alive, which was recorded at a show in Santa Cruz the previous October. Besides showcasing the trio’s unique vocal styling, the album captures the Roots Radics at their fiercest. 1993’s IV, and its dub companion IV Dub, gave heart to all those who believed that roots was fast becoming little more than a world lovefest. The album’s militancy, notably on “Naw Give Up the Fight,” proved the trio’s own passionate cultural concerns and dread roots were not fading. The equally powerful On the Rock followed two years later and was also accompanied by a dub set.

Then, in 1996, the group released their first single in years, the infectious “Feeling Irie,” taken from their new album, Free to Move. This attempt to push the band’s profile higher into the mainstream came to naught, the trio had already built up a loyal fan base and remained a successful live act, as 1997’s Live Again proved. Unlike its live predecessor, this time around Israel Vibrations packed the album with crowd-pleasing favorites.

It was nine years since the trio had re-formed and signed to RAS; they’d been recording and performing steadily since, but Craig was no longer happy with their current path left the group in 1997 to pursue a solo career. His debut album, Another Moses, featured his own backing band, the Zionists.

Continuing on as a duo, Spence and Bulgin reappeared in 1999 with a new studio album, Pay the Piper, and proved that Israel Vibrations would not be defeated by this defection. Jericho following hot on Piper’s heels in the new year, while 2000 also saw the release of the limited-edition Power of the Trinity three-CD box set; Dub Combo appeared in summer 2001. Acknowledging Craig’s longtime contribution to the group, the set is evenly divided between the trio, with each disc devoted to one individual member’s greatest compositions. Israel Vibrations’s career shows no signs of slowing, and the group has firmly carved a secure niche out of what once seemed an impenetrable surface. Their popularity seems assured, and they remain a vibrant live act and an always intriguing studio group.

Ben Rice might be described as quiet and unassuming – until he picks up a guitar. That stealthy quality has earned him the moniker “blues ninja,” evidenced in his vocal chops and songcraft as well as his guitar playing. While Ben started in traditional blues, over the years he’s built upon that foundation with soul, R&B, folk and country to fashion a welcoming front porch where everybody wants to hang out into the wee hours.
Ben’s early influences were vinyl records – his dad’s Steely Dan, Bob Marley, and Marshall Tucker and his mom’s Al Green, Barry White, and George Benson. Once his dad bought him a guitar at age seven, Ben was hooked. Soon all his allowance money was going toward exploratory thrift store finds: blues compilations featuring Mississippi John Hurt, Bukka White, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and cassette tapes of more contemporary artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray, all played until they wore out.
That broad range of influences combined to yield a guitar style that’s been described as “fearless,” “inventive,” and “powerful.” Whether he’s sliding up and down on a steel resonator or reeling off stinging leads on his custom-crafted electric, Ben’s intensity and inventiveness never fail to turn heads. Audiences also respond to his heartfelt songwriting that carries a classic, strongly relatable vibe. “My goal is to reach people in a way that they need to be reached,“ Ben says, “to say things they may not get to say or hear things they may not normally get to hear.”
Although Ben’s first passion was guitar, singing more recently has become a new favorite way to express his music. In performance he strives to be mindful of the meaning behind his lyrics, treating every song like a story and evoking the mood of what the story’s main character is going through. “I try to write songs that hold weight and meaning, but my songs mean whatever they need to for whoever hears them,” Ben says. “I want people to enjoy my music on their own terms.”
In 2023 Ben added horns, vocal harmonies, piano and organ to his lineup for a larger, more energetic band that he calls Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle.The response locally and on tour has been electric – the higher-intensity presentation of Ben’s music brings audiences to their feet and makes it clear Ben Rice is a formidable artist with more career triumphs still in his future.

AMIGO THE DEVIL

In the vast realm of modern folk and alternative rock, Amigo The Devil is an artist who channels a voice of unsettling beauty and raw truth. Splicing alarming honesty with personal realizations, his narratives carry weight, wisdom and wit. Nestled within the corners of Amigo the Devil’s haunting melodies and daring experimentation lies a tale as profound as the dirges he sings.

With a brilliant mind, full soul and a penchant for the obscure, Amigo the Devil’s songwriting harkens back to a more brutal state of songwriting. His songs are greatly influenced by the honesty of Leonard Cohen, the creativity of Tom Waits and the ruthlessness of Chavela Vargas. Rather than imitate, he identifies with their authentic disregard of consequences when it comes to songwriting and releasing music. Amigo the Devil is not polished or clean – he’s all heart, with reckless abandon. His understanding of emotions is deep and instinctual, choosing to embrace one’s flaws instead of trying to change them.

The son of a Greek father and Spanish mother, Amigo the Devil – otherwise known as Danny Kiranos – is a first-generation American from South Florida. He came of age in downtown Miami during the mid-1980s when the city was equal parts thriving, diverse and dirty. With a lust for travel and unusual experiences, Kiranos bounced around from city to city – 16 in total from LA to Europe – before he finally found a home in Texas. It was there, in Austin, that Amigo the Devil took root.

Kiranos spent significant portions of his earlier career embracing an almost nomadic lifestyle, absorbing tales from the underworld and penning songs about other wandering or lost souls. These stories, from the tragic to the comedic, found their way into his lyrics, and gained a steady fellowship of fans along the way.

Amigo the Devil’s first full-length album, Volume 1, released as an amalgamation of three earlier EPs. Laden with stories of his travels, relationships, and existential musings, the collection gave birth to ballads both mournful and satirical, including “Hell and You,” “I Hope Your Husband Dies” and “One Kind of People.” In 2018, Amigo the Devil released a proper studio album, Everything is Fine, which brought forth chantable ditties like “Hungover in Jonestown” as well as his dubiously introspective, “Cocaine and Abel.”

His first works showed the promise of the masterful songwriter Amigo the Devil has become. Early releases were dominated by dark tales of serial killers and the macabre mixed into a layered, deeper meaning. In themselves, the songs are genius. But as he grew as a songwriter the music grew with it, leading into a turning point that began shifting the tides for Kiranos’ songs. “For the first time,” he mentioned in an interview, “I began seeing the light at the end of this dark, winding tunnel I’d been singing about.”

This newfound perspective became evident in his 2021 album, Born Against, released under his independent label Liars Club Records. The music, while retaining its eerie charm, began to venture into territories of acceptance and redemption. The raw experimentation and flirtation with unconventional instruments all mirrored Amigo the Devil’s journey of self-discovery and growth. Born Against garnered critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Consequence, No Depression and American Songwriter, which described Amigo the Devil as “an artist who gives full reign to intrigue and intellect in equal measure.”

The next chapter of Amigo the Devil continues with the February 2024 release of Yours Until the War is Over – his most disarming and singular work to date. The first taste arrives with “Cannibal Within,” a song that descends to the depth of the human experience. Self-produced and recorded in a backwoods bar-turned-studio, the banjo-driven track speaks to honesty without pity. Experimental percussion – like the repetitive dropping of a pick, bottle tinks and the clacking of toy teeth – immerses the listener within an internal dialogue of self-doubt and insecurities, personified.

The 13 tracks that make up Yours Until the War is Over together weave themes of relatable self destruction and trauma bonding with arresting authenticity. Riddled with obscure literary references – akin to Kiranos’ maniac reading habit – the album proves that this whole Amigo the Devil thing isn’t some true crime niche. Yours Until the War is Over is a songwriter’s record.

Similar to Waits and Cohen, Amigo the Devil embodies the truest form of an artist in this new work. Inspired by a mantra adopted from unexpected, late-night advice, he doesn’t have to “be the story to tell the story.” Songwriting doesn’t have to be linear, or biographical.

“I don’t write songs for a purpose. The beauty lies in how people take them – the magic happens between the songwriter and the listener in that shared moment,” explains Kiranos. “Once this new record comes out, it’s not mine anymore. And that’s why we keep writing records, because then we have something that’s only ours again, even if just for a little while. Like wounded wildlife, you nurse them back to health and then you have to let them go.”

In a world filled with fleeting tunes and temporary stars, artists like Amigo the Devil are the reminders of the power of storytelling – of music’s age-old role in narrating human emotion. Kiranos seems to be on a lifelong journey, not just of personal discovery, but of reminding us all of the roots, the rawness and the reality that music can offer.
