The title of our course has a three-fold meaning. It is a course that highlights the work of writing women as they explore their own lives. With a slight change of emphasis, it also becomes a course about the act of writing about the lives of women. And with a subtle shift in the order of the words, the course title becomes Women’s Writing Lives, a celebration of the endurance of women who write and engage with the world through language. This course will explore all three aspects of this title by engaging with biography and memoir, poetry and dramatic performance.

In addition, this course begins with the assumption that being a “writer” is not limited to a professional pursuit but includes anyone who takes pen to hand and puts thoughts on paper. Thus, our class will engage with the act of writing itself, in the form of short reflections, memories, and random musings as part of each class’s format.

Combining lecture and discussion, we will often work in groups that will then report to the larger class for general discussion. The course will also contain a writing component: each week, participants will be asked to compose a short “free-write” on a topic related to that week’s discussion, which volunteers may share with the class.

Sometimes we all need a little help getting our word wagons out of the mud.

Writing prompts can give you the shove you need to get out of your creative rut and moving forward on your next story, book, or poem!

Every writer out there has dealt with writer’s block.

It’s frustrating to find yourself stuck in the void between wanting to write and that initial creative “spark” that gets you started.

Maybe you’ve tried forcing yourself to write but haven’t been able to come up with anything, or maybe you’ve avoided the pen and paper (or keyboard) altogether.

Sometimes what you need is a little outside inspiration!

At Prompt, you’ll be surrounded by other word nerds in a laid-back environment where you can have the freedom to be silly, creative, and inventive to see where the writing prompts take you.

Each month, we’ll try out different writing prompts to serve as jumping-off points. Then we’ll set a timer and let you and your creative brain loose on the page. If you want, you can share some of what you created with each other.

By the end of each session, you’ll be out of the blank page rut and moving your word wagon onward again!

Jeaux Bartlett (they/them or xe/xem) is a writer and teacher living in Eugene, Oregon. Jeaux has published several books and online courses focused on personal growth and their work has appeared in the Register Guard, Lane Monthly, Rochester insider, Crossroads Chronicle, and Nature’s Wisdom amongst other publications.

Jeaux is a certified Grief Recovery Method specialist, a National Spiritualist Teacher, and a Reiki Master Teacher. Jeaux enjoys writing about overcoming loss and adversity, and learning to trust yourself again.

Jeaux is currently working on Banned in Barbados, an autofiction novel based on their middle school years at an all-girls convent school in Barbados. When they are not writing, Jeaux enjoys playing with natural dyes, knitting, and building a writing camp in the woods.

Daryll Lynne Evans (she/her) began her writing career as a playwright with the Performing Arts Conservatory in Colorado, where she also taught theatre and play writing to youth. She has an MFA in fiction from Purdue University.

She has taught writing workshops as part of the Loose Leaf Writing Series in Indiana, and for the Mid-Valley chapter of Willamette Writers in Eugene, and had been a presenter at Wordcrafters, Willamette Writers, and South Coast Writers conferences. She directs Wordcrafters in Eugene.

Celebrate Lunar New Year and the Year of the Snake with Asian American Council of Oregon! On Friday February 7th, the Community Center For The Performing Arts is proud to present a documentary film screening of Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts featuring a live Q&A with Director/Producer, Dru Holley.

To celebrate Black History Month, award-winning filmmaker and founder of Black Bald Films, Dru Holley is embarking on a multi-city viewing tour for his documentary film Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts.

The film tells the powerful story of the African American soldiers who served in the U.S. Army during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Often overlooked in history, these brave men fought not only on the frontlines of battle but also against racial injustice within the military and society. This documentary sheds light on the courage and resilience of the Buffalo Soldiers as they navigated the complex challenges of racism, war, and their contributions to the American frontier. Through historical insights and personal stories, the film honors their legacy and sheds new light on an important chapter in American history.

“The central focus of our documentary is these accomplished Black men that are in our past that we need to remember, and to remember the strength that’s in our DNA,” Holley says. “It’s about knowing that we have more of a history than slavery in America, that we’re also bad-ass Buffalo Soldiers, and they did more of the work than fight Natives. We want to say, ‘Don’t be scared to come out of the inner cities and go to the national parks. That’s part of our history too.’”

Captivating audiences and winning awards at film festivals across the country since its debut, Buffalo Soldiers “provides a unique narrative to a part of our history that has been overlooked and overshadowed. [the film] is steeped in history, yet it’s timely,” says Seattle Medium.

Established by Congress in 1867, Many African American men enlisted in exchange for full citizenship as promised by the 14th Amendment, but were denied this right by the Jim Crow laws established in the Reconstructionist South. In spite of that, these patriotic men helped lead the United States expansion westward; they built and guarded the Pacific Railroad and served as park rangers in places like Yosemite before the U.S. government established the National Park Service.

These African American soldiers fought bravely in the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, the Mexican Punitive Expedition, World War I & World War II, but the Buffalo Soldiers also participated in the subjugation of Native peoples as the United States appropriated tribal land, the persecution of striking silver miners in Idaho, and against Filipinos fighting for independence during the Spanish-American War, resulting in a complicated legacy.

It is particularly relevant today as our country is roiling with the agony of racial strife. By combining a multitude of diverse perspectives, the film examines the profound and often-contradictory roles played in American history by The Buffalo Soldiers, and how they fought on two very different sets of front lines: military conflicts abroad and civil rights struggles at home.

What if this Valentine’s Day could be a portal into penning with passion and letting your heart be heard?

Over the course of Valentines Day weekend with Jorah LaFleur (voted the Best Poet in Eugene!), you’ll move from a blank page to sharing onstage as you write and perform a spoken word poem.

This workshop might be for you if:
-You’ve wanted to write spoken word poetry but haven’t known how to start.
-You have experience writing for the page, but want to practice writing towards the stage.
-You want to explore wordsy creativity as a way to deal with the pain and hilarity of being human.
-You’re a writer who enjoys the productive power of a committed container full of prompts, new approaches, and invitations to get unstuck.
-You’re a bit terrified of hearing your voice on a mic, and have a secret desire to share your work with an audience.

In this weekend writing retreat, you will:

Jorah LaFleur (she/her) is a writer/performer who enjoys wearing many different hats. She finds herself on stage as a spoken word poet, event emcee, actor, and interviewer. Offstage, she works with youth as a teaching artist. Each role engages her relentless curiosity about cultivating connection through creative communication.

Jorah is currently serving as WITS Coordinator and lead Writer in Residence for Wordcrafters in Eugene. She is committed to helping others experience the power of being seen/heard, and to promoting the arts as tools of social change and community building. For over a decade (2006 to 2019), she ran the Eugene Poetry Slam, which gifted her with a wealth of stage experience, and a front row seat to the recitation of thousands of original poems. Jorah has been writing and performing for 25 years.

The Eugene Disc Golf Club (EDGC) will hold its 14^th Annual Ice Bowl Event on February 15^th, 2025 at Dexter State Park’s disc golf course.

Since 2012, our community’s local disc golf club has raised $92,765 in financial support and thousands of pounds of food for Food For Lane County! Plans for this year will be no different than prior – We’ll work together to support those in our community facing food insecurity.

EDGC is graciously asking for your support.

Please consider making a monetary contribution towards our fundraising goal with a tax-deductible donation to FFLC. Our event is also in need of swag donations (merchandise/gift cards/coupons) to include in our raffle and for awards. Song by timeless song Eggy reaches out a hand, inviting you along as a great story unfolds. Eggy’s music traces the full spectrum of emotions, evoked by a life well lived alongside friends well loved.

Eggy formed from a high school dream into a full-fledged reality. Aligning together in 2016, the lineup of Alex Bailey (drums, vocals), Jake Brownstein (guitar, vocals), Mike Goodman (bass, vocals) and Dani Battat (keys, vocals) has captured the ears of listeners across the USA and beyond.

Following the release of their 2019 debut record, “Watercolor Days,” the band has toured constantly, performing in over 40 states. Amidst their travels in 2021, Eggy stopped in Nashville to record two singles, released as Nashville Tapes the following year. Highlights from the band’s many eclectic shows have been handpicked by the band for consumption, including the most recent “Eggy Selects: Spring Tour 2023, Vol. 1).”

Eggy’s new record, “Waiting Game,” is out now. Co-produced by White Denim’s James Petralli, “Waiting Game” showcases the band’s artistry through a concentrated and refined studio approach as a compliment to their exploratory live shows.

LOCAL SUPPORT – SPUNJ

Spunj is a high energy, multi-genre four-piece based out of Eugene, Oregon. Using their diverse musical backgrounds and tastes, Spunj believes in making their live shows not just a musical performance, but an experience. The band incorporates classic songwriting with sections of improvisation to seamlessly weave from genre to genre while keeping the energy high and always danceable. Since 2019, the band has toured the Pacific Northwest relentlessly growing from playing bars and college parties to playing established and respectable venues and festivals and opening for major jam acts such as Spafford, Eggy, Twiddle, Lespecial, Cycles, and Yak Attack. The quartet has also released a full length studio album that is available on all major streaming platforms such as Spotify, iTunes and Bandcamp. Spunj plans to tour heavily in the West Coast with intentions to break out further into the United States.

She had been with First Interstate Bank for the last 15 years and an active and involved member of the community through several non-profits. Naturalists, explorers, and scientists have a unique understanding and appreciation for the natural history of the American West. This course is a journey through this complex region, drawing on geography, geology, evolution, and ecology. We explore the history and inter-relationships of the physical landscape and the biological organisms that inhabit this unique area. While the course emphasizes broad principles, the examples given will be drawn from the Western landscape and the plants and animals that dwell there. This educational series enables students to appreciate the West better through follow-up field trips, vacations, and general sightseeing. However, it is crucial to acknowledge humans' significant impact on this region, with species extinctions, habitat loss, and climate change becoming increasingly prevalent. To that end, class participants may be inclined to work towards conserving these precious natural resources.

MAGIC CITY HIPPIES

Imagine, the memorable clink of ice hitting a rocks glass, the scent of muddled limes and mint, the faint crackle as the tipple is poured, the effervescent fizz of soda about to broach the rim, the straw insertion and swirl, the first sip of vacation...Life would be miserable without these gifts, and life would most certainly suck without the perfect soundtrack to the first cocktail of some much needed time off. Pop the cork on some Magic City Hippies.

MCH initially floated onto the scene as Robby Hunter Band, but stumbled into their true identity in 2015 when their album Magic City Hippies gave them a fresh sound and a new name. Fusing Miami’s sunshine-soaked funk with an after-hours swagger, they’ve since captivated audiences worldwide, from intimate clubs to the stages of Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Lollapalooza.

Their Hippie Castle EP (2015) was just the tip of the proverbial ice cube in a cocktail glass of hippie sass, blending poolside melodies and three-day weekend grooves. By the time Modern Animal (2019) arrived, Magic City Hippies had taken listeners beachside, layering even more sultry swank onto their already laid-back vibe. Emery is an emo-rock band that started in 2001. THE ALMOST

Loaded guns, space heaters, and big skies. Welcome to the lethal littered landscape of Jim Heath’s imagination. True to his high evangelical calling, Jim is a Revelator, both revealing & reinterpreting the country-blues-rock roots of American music. He’s a time-traveling space-cowboy on a endless interstellar musical tour, and we are all the richer & “psychobillier” for getting to tag along.

Seeing REVEREND HORTON HEAT live is a transformative experience. Flames come off the guitars. Heat singes your skin. There’s nothing like the primal tribal rock & roll transfiguration of a Reverend Horton Heat show. BLACK JOE LEWIS

Anatomy texts might not show it, but the greatest soul and blues music leaves no doubt that the hip bone is directly connected to the heart -- a fact that's driven home in every note laid down by Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. As they prove on their Lost Highway debut, Tell 'Em What Your Name Is, the Austin-based combo has the kind of gritty attitude and deliciously greasy groove-consciousness that'd pass muster in the toughest juke joint.

To paraphrase Ike and Tina Turner, Tell 'Em What Your Name Is gives Lewis the chance to play nice and easy as well as nice and rough. He and his bandmates take the latter route more often -- as on the fiery, brass-laced opener "Gunpowder" and the unabashedly horndog anthem "Big Booty Woman." But there's far more than one trick up their collective sleeve, as borne out by the dark New Orleans march "Master Sold My Baby."

"It's weird..people say I come up with all these different kinds of songs, and I guess that's true, but they all just come out naturally," says Lewis, who cites James Brown and Lightnin' Hopkins as two of his bigger influences. "If I sit down and try to write a song, it just sounds contrived. All the songs on this record, I just made up as I went along. I couldn't do a lot of 'em again if I didn't have 'em on tape."

That from-the-gut stream-of-consciousness permeates the disc, with Lewis wailing wildly -- in a voice that's one part Joe Tex, one part Tyrone Davis -- through sweat-soaked offerings like the gutbucket "I'm Broke" and "Please, Part Two" as his bandmates turn up the heat, taking a low simmer to a full boil with turn-on-a-dime precision.

"The thing about the band is that we play with each other, not against each other," says Honeybears' guitarist Zach Ernst. "It's not a contest, the way it is in some bands. We communicate with each other without speaking, and I think that has a lot to do with Joe's attitude -- he has an amazing ability to just draw people in. For a lot of people, the blues is a museum piece, but Joe brings it into the moment."

If not for a twist of fate, Lewis might never have gotten up on stage at all. Growing up in the small town of Round Rock, Texas, he was more likely to be found on the football field than in the band room -- but landing a job in an Austin pawn shop put him at a (shall we say) crossroads in life.

"My dad and my uncles listened to soul and blues when I was a kid, but I never really took much notice," says Lewis. "When I was about 19 or 20, I was working in this pawn shop and all these guys would bring in guitars. One day, I started playing around with one and took it home and started teaching myself how to play."

Buoyed by the encouragement of friends, Lewis soon gravitated to the fertile open mic scene of his adopted hometown, where he performed as a solo artist, a period he now laughingly recalls as "horrible..I was usually too drunk or too scared to put on a good show, but people kept asking me to come back."

While he eventually put together a band with a solid lineup, Lewis couldn't capture the mojo he was looking for and was seriously considering retiring from music in his mid-twenties -- until Ernst entered the picture.

"I was on the [University of Texas] programming board and we'd booked Little Richard to do a show and I immediately thought of Joe," says the guitarist. "I heard he was down on music and was working at a restaurant shucking oysters, so I approached him as a fan -- and Joe ended up playing the show with his old band."

The plea worked, the gig was explosive, but also a partnership was born. Shortly after that gig, Zach formed a band around Joe and the rough and ready Honeybears' were born. Four weeks later, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears played their first gig. Their stylings quickly drew attention from local tastemakers -- like the Austin Chronicle, which marveled at the singer's ability to "spit lyrics in short bursts of aggression like bricks at glass windows" -- and fellow musicians like Okkervil River and Spoon, both of which tapped him and the Honeybears to hit the road as an opening act.

"Joe's a really special, really natural performer," says Spoon drummer Jim Eno, who thought enough of the band to lend his production skills to the new disc. "We were able to do about 75-percent of the album live, and that's something you very, very rarely do."

The spontaneity was immediately evident on the Honeybears' self-titled EP -- which spotlighted the band's controversial, tongue-in-cheek concert staple "Bitch, I Love You" -- and is even more at the fore of Tell 'Em What Your Name Is. To hear Lewis tell it, however, they've only scratched the surface of what they're capable of.

"The way I look at it, I have to step my game up every day," he says. "I look at it as a challenge. It's great that we've gotten noticed, but we’ve got to keep those people interested and bring more people in. If you don't keep moving forward, nobody's gonna care -- and I'm gonna make sure people really care about this band."

PIñATA PROTEST

Punk rock like abuela used to make!

Piñata Protest is a “Tex-Mex punk” band from San Antonio, TX. Their self described sound and attitude arises from the two counter-clashing worlds that the band embraces: punk and Tex-Mex.

Piñata Protest’s unique and catchy sound takes the traditional folk rhythms of Tex-Mex music (conjunto and norteño music that is native to the South-Texas and Nortern-Mexican region they originate from) along with the three-row button accordion and combine that with the fast tempos and attitude of punk rock, ska, and many other genres. Along with the use of traditional instruments and rhythms the band also sings in their regional mix of Spanish and English (or Spanglishas it’s called locally). Their songs lyrics cover a range of topics, from political topics close to the ethno-identities of the band, drinking, love, religion, and racism. Adding to their sonic performances is a lively and energetic live show that ignites crowds to mosh, skank, and twirl their dance partners.

Piñata Protest was founded by the Mexican-born singer, song writer, and accordionist Álvaro Del Norte. The band includes Regino Lopez on electric guitar and vocals, Richie Brown on electric bass and vocals, and Chris-Ruptive on drums. Other instruments such as the trumpet and güido are used in not only their studio recordings but their live performances as well.

For over ten years the quartet has maintained a busy schedule of performing and touring throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Spain, and France alongside range of musical acts such as The Reverend Horton Heat, Mariachi El Bronx, Molotov, GBH, Tagada Jones, Guttermouth, Voodoo Glow Skills, Brujeria, The Toadies, Ramon Ayala, The Blasters, Authority Zero, Agent Orange, Ozomatli, Mustard Plug, The Blasters, and Wayne Hancock.

Festivals are a strong point for Piñata Protest. Their very eclectic sound, interactive show, and energetic performances makes them a perfect fit for a wide variety of festivals. Most notably the band has had several official appearances at Punk Rock Bowling, SXSW, The Tejano Fan Fair, Flogging Molly’s Salty Dog Cruise, Palomino Fest, Punk In Drublic, The Latin BMI Awards, Accordion Noir, Muddy Roots Festival, and a slew punk, folk, and Mexican themed festivals.

The bands unique sound has also leaded them to be featured in soundtracks for the following major and independently release films: Tequila Re-Pasado (2023), Me Estas Matando Susana (2016), La Soldera (2015), Circus of the Dead (2014). The band has also written music specially for Me Estas Matando Susana.

The band has also had several collaborations with companies including releasing their own beer through Freetail Brewing with a released of Piñata Protest beer which was distributed in grocery chains, bars, and venues across Texas. The band has also collaborated with other worldwide brands such as Tecate beer, Ford Motor Company, and Nike Athletics.

As tool for improvement, the value stream map allows an organization to identify value, show process waste, communicate process flow throughout the organization, and identify opportunities for improvement.

Tunnel Vision is quickly becoming Southern California's favorite new Surf, Reggae, Ska band. The band is comprised of four musicians who grew up in the San Clemente, area with instruments in their hands and skateboards and surfboards under their feet.

Growing up in SoCal, the band was heavily influenced by the Punk Rock, Reggae and Ska music of bands like The Descendents, Black Flag, Misfits, Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, The Expendables, NoFX, Rancid, and Reel Big Fish. Join us for a special evening celebrating Black History Month and the intersection of black music, art, and social movements at Eugene’s iconic WOW Hall. This unique event will take you on a journey through the transformative cultural forces that shaped the 70s counterculture and the vibrant Black Arts Group (B.A.G.) that left its mark on Eugene’s creative scene.

The night begins with a brief introduction by Habitat for Humanity Oregon Board President, Eric Richardson, setting the stage for the exploration of B.A.G.’s roots, including their ties to the Black migration story and the cultural revolution in St. Louis, Missouri. We’ll explore the legendary gatherings of poets and musicians that helped shape the Black Arts Group and American jazz musician, poet, and visual artist, Oliver Lake, highlighting his impactful contributions to the arts.

Engage in a community panel discussion moderated by, Trip Summers. This 30-minute conversation will focus on the role of music in Eugene and its ties to the broader freedom movement.

The evening continues with a 12-minute piece featuring Ken Kesey performing his famous “Trickster The Squirrel” story, transporting us back to the heart of the 70s counterculture.

Throughout the night, the vibe of the WOW Hall will be brought to life with psychedelic lighting, evoking the spirit of the 70s and the cultural revolution that took place in this very space. The event will feature displays of posters, photographs, and memorabilia showcasing Black artists who graced the stage here, including Arnet Coleman and other influential poets.

To cap off the evening, Eric will present a special segment of his radio show Pure Jazz Revisited, taking us through the sounds that shaped the era and continue to inspire today.

This event is a celebration of the power of art, music, and the convergence of social movements that changed the cultural landscape of Eugene and beyond.
