Saturdays: November 1, 8, 15, 22; 9:30 a.m.–noon

This seminar surveys China’s cultural history through brief excerpts of significant literature well known to Chinese, and key to understanding the context of current Chinese thought. The student will acquire a knowledge of and appreciation for major literature from critical periods of Chinese history that shape or reflect the thinking of contemporary educated Chinese. The classical period set patterns of hierarchy, as well as the role of personal meditation, attachment to place and social networks. Revolutionary period work reflected the struggles of encounters with the West and national identity adjustments, from self-mocking pain at foreign repression to assertive nationalism. The major work of Mao (a classically trained librarian) continues the transitional struggle in both a practical and more strategically violent way, echoing some of the hubris of a legendary semi-hero. The final globally distinguished selections combine major elements of this literary heritage playing out in the present.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Dr. Susan Walcott has a B.A. in History from Swarthmore College, an M.A. in Chinese history from Rutgers University, a PhD. in Geography from Indiana University, and was a Ford Foundation scholar in Chinese at Princeton University. She headed the China Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers and founded Asia Research Centers at two universities. She is now a Professor of Geography Emerita at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Her principal research interests concern regional economic development, particularly in rapidly transitioning areas throughout Asia. Books, numerous chapters and articles from grant-supported overseas research focusing on high technology parks and industry clusters (life science, furniture, tea) across the U.S. and China, modernization in Bhutan, and immigrant entrepreneurs. Active in many aspects of OLLI, she finds that giving presentations is the most fun.

ABOUT CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINARS

These courses are for people eager to engage in a studious seminar format. Each in-person only seminar meets weekly, over four sessions. The seminars are led by current and retired professors who provide formal study guides and lead college-level discussions, with participants actively contributing to each session. Seminars are noncredit and ungraded but include challenging homework.

Participation is open to all adults; no previous affiliation with UO is required. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) membership is not required, however, active OLLI members may register at a reduced fee.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Two poets, two cellists, one night: a harvest of words and strings. A performance that blurs the line between music and poetry, ritual and art.

On a night set aside for remembrance and renewal, Harvest Me brings together two celebrated wordsmiths (Jorah LaFleur and Eric Braman) and two exceptional cellists (The Hillsinger Cello Duo) to weave spoken word and strings into a single, unforgettable performance. The resonance of the cello is a partner to the rhythm of poetry, carrying each phrase into new emotional territory. Voices and instruments move in dialogue—sometimes echoing, sometimes colliding, always creating something larger than either alone.

Through themes of harvest, loss, and rebirth, the audience is invited into deep, participatory listening: to words that sing of reckoning, to cello lines that mourn and celebrate in the same breath. Expect an evening of sound and spirit, where words fall like leaves, music gathers like ritual, and something wholly new is born in their meeting.

Jorah LaFleur is a writer, performer, and community arts advocate who has spent her life immersed in the living art of spoken word poetry and the connections it sparks. She has emceed concerts and festivals, acted, facilitated workshops, and for over a decade nurtured voices as host of the Eugene Poetry Slam. Now working with Wordcrafters in Eugene as a teaching artist and Writers in the Schools Coordinator, Jorah thrives on collaboration—bringing words into dialogue with music, community, and the wider world. Voted 2024’s “Best Poet” in the Eugene Weekly, she continues to champion the magic that happens when voices rise together.

The Hillsinger Cello Duo, founded in 2021 by cellists Nisha Calkins and Ralph Stricker-Chapman, has been making music together for over two decades, with a focus on community engagement and collaboration with other artists, including singers, dancers, and poets. The duo draws on a large body of well-established repertoire for two cellos, as well as making custom arrangements and providing ambient music for special events and celebrations.

Jessica McKenna and Zach Reino create a completely improvised musical in an attempt to combat the notion that musicals should be “carefully crafted” or “thought out at all.”

Zach Reino and Jessica McKenna are a versatile musical comedy duo. They wrote and composed music for the WGA award-winning Peacock Series Baking It starring Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler and Andy Samberg. The duo has also written songs and musical sketches for the hit animation show Rick and Morty, Party Over Here (a Fox sketch show produced by The Lonely Island), the Peacock series Pitch Perfect: Bumper In Berlin, Buzzfeed, FunnyOrDie and Nickelodeon. Zach and Jess are currently developing TV and Film projects with Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions, David Wain (The State, Role Models, Wanderlust) and Elizabeth Banks’ Brownstone Productions. They also created and starred in Serious Music, a digital series for ABC.

Their improvised musical podcast Off Book has been praised by various online publications including Indie Wire, USA Today, Parade, AV Club and Splitsider and been featured at Comedy Central’s Clusterfest Festival, Moontower, the world renowned Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, and the Netflix Is A Joke Festival in LA. MCS&R is the project of musician, filmmaker and journalist Matthew Dunehoo, a Midwestern transplant who led numerous obscure bands over the last couple decades before moving to L.A. and committing to solo performance. Mary is a trickster spirit, channeled through face paint, dirty suits, and purgatorial theatrics, and soundtracked through music that juxtaposes live guitar and vocals against alien backing tracks. Fans of David Bowie, Def Leppard, and Cocteau Twins would find common ground in Matthew's soundworld. He'll tour the West Coast this autumn to support his debut album Que Linda, which was released in March.

On Friday, Nov. 7th the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Sa-Roc to the WOW Hall.

Sa-Roc is one of the most commanding voices in contemporary hip-hop, known for her razor-sharp lyricism, fiery delivery, and socially conscious message. Born in Southeast Washington, D.C., during the height of the crack era, she grew up surrounded by poverty and systemic injustice — experiences that deeply shaped her worldview and artistry. After leaving Howard University, she relocated to Atlanta, where she met DJ and producer Sol Messiah. Their collaboration led to her debut EP Astral Chronicles (2008) and a prolific run of projects including Journey of the Starseed and Nebuchadnezzar.

Sa-Roc has shared stages with legends such as The Roots, Common, Jay Electronica, Rakim, and Talib Kweli, earning recognition from Black Thought, who called her to perform with him at A3C. In 2016, she signed with Rhymesayers Entertainment, releasing a string of acclaimed singles and videos, including the viral anthem “Forever.” Her debut Rhymesayers album, The Sharecropper’s Daughter, is a powerful reflection on generational trauma and triumph.

Beyond music, Sa-Roc is a wellness advocate, international performer, and ambassador for Hip Hop is Green, continuing to use her art to inspire empowerment, healing, and social change worldwide.

Scienz Messiah is a hip-hop collective (or “supergroup” as they’re often described) bringing together lyrical voices and production under a unified vision.

Scienz Messiah situates itself at the intersection of spirituality, musicality, and hip-hop culture, aiming to push the art form forward while remaining rooted in its foundations.

Mike Viola is a producer, musician, songwriter and singer. Decades into his career his music continues to resonate with and inspire new generations of musicians and music lovers. Starting in 2019 Viola hit a prolific streak and released fan favorite records The American Egypt, Godmuffin, and Paul McCarthy, all recorded in his Los Angeles studio Barebones. His recent albums have garnered a whole new fan base and sold out shows around the US. His latest album, “Rock Of Boston”, was released on September 20th 2024 on Good Morning Monkey/Grand Phony in the US, Lojinx in Europe and SONY Japan and an international tour followed.

Rock Of Boston was recorded over the winter of 2023 on ½” tape at Barebones, Viola’s home studio in Los Angeles. Once again joined by his friends Jake Sinclair on bass and Brendon Urie on drums. Viola says, “I’m always writing songs, or pieces of songs, or riffs. My writing process changes every song, so I never get trapped in a method. I let the song lead me. While I was on a world tour playing guitar for Panic at The Disco, I wrote the bulk of this record on the bus between soundcheck and showtime. On the days off, I’d find a recording studio wherever we were and I’d book studio time to sneak away to lay down a few ideas. When the tour finished, Jake and Brendon came home to LA and we never stopped playing music together. We just switched from touring with Panic! to recording Rock Of Boston pretty seamlessly without a break. Maybe that’s why the riffs seem bigger on this record, we had spent all those months in hockey arenas around the world playing big music.”

Viola is currently working on the follow up to Rock Of Boston to be released in the Winter/Spring of 2026 with a tour to follow. Never slowing down.

Waylon Wyatt is an 18-year-old Folk/Country artist born and raised in Hackett, Arkansas. Inspired by red-dirt contemporaries Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan, Waylon began writing songs at fifteen, workshopping them after long summer days spent working with his father on construction jobs. Waylon recently released his debut EP, Til The Sun Goes Down, now having received over 100M combined streams cross-platform. He is in the process of recording his second body of work, and is touring with artists such as Dwight Yoakam, Dylan Gossett, and Sam Barber throughout the rest of the year.

On Sunday, November 9th, the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly presents Melt Banana at the WOW Hall.

Last year, MELT-BANANA released their new album, ‘3 + 5.’ It is their eighth album. Like their previous works, it maintains the aggressive and violent pop sensibility along with a playful musicality, while also showing their eagerness to open new doors once again. This album presents a different side of them, yet when you listen to it, it still feels definitely like MELT-BANANA. They don’t seem to hold back at all. Instead, their willingness to keep pushing themselves is truly impressive.

Both now and in the past, MELT-BANANA continues to take us to new dimensions. I can feel their desire to present something new, and I am genuinely happy to be able to listen to the album.

This time, their US tour will last about a week and will only cover the West Coast. For them, who typically go on tours that last two to three months, this is a short tour. As the tour title ‘Sling Shot Tour 2025 (Area: US West Coast)’ suggests, it seems to be a targeted tour. Their upcoming tour includes a performance at Freakout Festival in Seattle, along with several additional dates along the West Coast — a rare chance to experience their live show across the region.

Averaging 150-200 shows a year all over North America and Canada, he has been a consistent favorite at such festivals as: Wakarusa, Electric Forest, Big Day out, All Good, Bella, High Sierra, Summer Meltdown, Montreal Jazz Festival, and many more. He was also the ?Tap Water Award' winner at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for best musical act. His legendary collaboration and multiple tours with Buckethead as The Frankenstein Brothers has further cemented his virtuoso story as a creative visionary as well.
His innovation continues to soar with the announcement of another tour kicking off in January 2015. Along with his pioneering main instrument, The Magic Pipe, a monstrosity of metal, strings, and electronics, facilitates the dynamic live creation of music and magic in ways only That1Guy can conjure, expect to see magic as well now integrated into the already clever performance. With this addition of incorporating magic seamlessly into his live shows, he has legitimately achieved an all inclusive audio/visual performance unlike anything experienced before. “So much of my music has miraculous qualities to it because it's hard to tell what's going on. There are lots of slights of hand and sonic misdirection. It feels like I was meant to do magic”.
Silverman's backstory is very similar to many musicians that have come before him. He grew up a self proclaimed music geek, soaked in the influence of his jazz musician father, and enrolled in San Francisco Conservatory of Music before joining the local jazz scene himself as a sought-after percussive bassist. This is where the similarities end, though, and where That1Guy truly began. “In my case, being a bass player, I just felt very restricted by the instrument itself,” he says. “I've always wanted to sound different and have my own sound. I was headed that way on the bass, but for me to fully realize what I was hearing in my head sonically I was going to have to do it my way”. His influential and innovative double bass style eventually evolved into what we see today as That1Guy and ?The Magic Pipe'.

On Thursday, November 13th the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes The Kilans to the WOW Hall.

Emerging from the Salt Lake City music scene, The Kilans are an indie rock band known for their raw sound and intense live shows. Formed in 2023, the band features Jack Ongman on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jacob Shultz on lead guitar, Cooper Brezoff on bass, and David Wiseman on drums. It all started when Jack and Jacob met while skateboarding in college and began jamming together. They soon brought in David and Cooper, and everything clicked.

Their debut single, “Curly,” dropped just five months after they formed and made waves in Salt Lake City. However, it was their second release, “Why is it Light Out?,” with its introspective lyrics and dynamic instrumentation, that really built their loyal following and got them featured on numerous Spotify playlists. Since then, The Kilans have been recording and playing shows, including gigs in Los Angeles, continually pushing the boundaries of indie rock with their blend of modern and classic influences.

acclaimed act has been leaving it’s mark up and down the west coast since the summer of
2022 – delighting existing fans of Zappa’s music and turning on an entirely new generation
to the musical complexity, biting social commentary and humorous musings of one of the

th century’s most prolific composers.
Supported by an onslaught of 6 horns, tuned percussion and 4 vocalists, Brock brings his
unparalleled energy and charisma to the stage with every show. Together, the ensemble
delivers a performance that spans more than 3 decades of Zappa’s music, pulling material
from early Mothers of Invention through the late 1980’s, and presents the music with
power, authenticity and musical prowess – all served with a healthy dose of humorous
stage antics
There is no greater testament to the respect that SFO have garnered than the number of
Zappa alumni who have shown the band their support and encouragement. Arthur Barrow,
Ray White, Bruce Fowler, Ike Willis and Lisa Popeil are just a few of those who have
shared the stage with the band since their inception – all of whom come away with the
same reaction. In a recent radio interview with Zappa’s prolific trombonist of 3 decades,
Bruce Fowler, the horn player simplified his thoughts on the band to 3 words “They get
it…”

On Monday, November 17th, the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Soulfly to the WOW Hall.

SOULFLY has been spearheading the movement of groove metal for decades now, reaching into limitless directions while seamlessly retaining the expert quality and perfection that bears the Cavalera seal of approval. Coming straight from the deep jungles of Brazil to the arid expanses of Arizona, Max and company are soon to deliver their thirteenth album, the mighty, heart-pounding, tribally fueled CHAMA. Once again, a remarkable testament to the Brazilian songwriter’s natural affinity for slamming yet rhythmic riffs that defined his signature sound to listeners around the world. A true return to the spiritual upbringing of SOULFLY that somehow bears a modern-day edge and vitality. Something that could only be attained by a true master of the craft, and Max has stunned us all again per usual.

It has always been apparent that Max has brought attention to Latin American culture, art, and spirituality through his music, and CHAMA brings him back to those dirty streets of Belo Horizonte as he screams in Portuguese. The name Chama itself literally translates to ‘Flame”, but it also embodies the burning vitality of the human spirit, the strength of ancestors, the forces of nature that bind us to the tempo of the earth. Accompanying the album CHAMA is the story of a boy from the dingy favelas of Brazil, who in search of a higher power, finds himself amongst the tribes of the Amazon, who show him the way of the jungle’s souls. Max comments that the album itself loosely follows this concept, the boy Chama finding his fire amongst the chaos and debris of a collapsing industrial world.

The tribes and indigenous peoples of the Americas play a large role in the inspiration for many of Max’s recordings, and Chama is certainly no exception, bearing the scene of a Navajo ceremonial dancer on the cover of the album. Featured on the inner label is also the image of Oxossi, a guardian of nature. Drums and fire and a ritual that beckons the summoning of ancestor spirits, a burning fuel that defies the darkness, SOULFLY ventures into these sacred spaces where few other metal bands dare to tread. The album kicks off with an intro track, ‘Indigenous Inquisition’, an homage to the genocide and extinction of the original American people, as Max hauntingly recites the names of long forgotten tribes, a proclamation to the bloodshed and warrior pulse of those wrongfully persecuted. An uprising for the underdogs, a home for the homeless, peace for the war afflicted. The song remains insane.

Max has been playing alongside his son, the enigmatic drummer, Zyon Cavalera for over a decade, and for the first time in SOULFY’s career, Max has passed the producing credits and creative direction to his son, and it’s clear to see the apple does not fall far from the tree. Zyon has brought an intensity and commitment to the band that is fresh and invigorating, stomping through song after song like a driven warhorse. If you’ve seen SOULFLY live with Zyon then you know he commands the stage from behind the drum set, directing the tempo and swing of each song like a well-seasoned general. Upon speaking to Zyon, he commented on the evolution of the music, exploratory sounds, the new blood brought to the band with the lineup changes over the years, the excitement of playing with new musicians. “For me personally, to have over ten years with the band has helped me grow and try new things musically. I think there is a strong fire lit within SOULFLY to take things to a new level. We’re not content to stand around, we are hungry.” He certainly displays this hunger, not only as a top-notch drummer, but also as a creative entity and a song structuring adept.

CHAMA was recorded at the Platinum Underground Studio in Mesa, Arizona by John Aquilino. John has worked with Max and company multiple times before and is not only a talented engineer but a family friend. The studio features the highest end Focusrite board, one of only three in the world, and is as prestigious as they come. Also featured on the producing credits is the masterful Arthur Rizk, who has not only worked with the Cavalera family numerous times before, but has also helped to shape the world of heavy metal in the modern day. You can throw a stone anywhere in a record shop and probably hit an album that Arthur worked on, and that is said with the deepest respect. Arthur truly brings recordings to life with his wizardly mixing and mastering, he is the obvious choice to flesh out any album of any extreme genre. His work on CHAMA cannot be overstated, he is one of the best in the business for a reason.

The familial ties do not end there though, Max has made it a point to work within his circle of talented sons, and CHAMA also enlisted the works of Igor Amadeus Cavalera, who played bass on multiple tracks and helped write the lyrics to the title track Chama and Favela Dystopia, a recognition to the grueling street life of the favelas of Brazil. Family means everything within SOULFLY, and the beating rhythm of the album flows like blood through veins, pulsing to the unique pattern of birth that runs as deep as tree roots into the earth.

SOULFLY has long been known to include an ensemble of guests and studio musicians, including a repertoire of guest stars such as Chino Moreno, Greg Puciato, Tom Araya, and countless other experts. Their thirteenth installment, CHAMA, also offers fans fresh collaborations to excite the audiophiles. Mike DeLeon (Flesh Hoarder, Phil Anselmo And The Illegals) has been playing live with SOUFLY for some time now and has made his first appearance on a studio album, ripping through some blistering solos, unnerving noises, and an array of effects driven soundscapes that are sure to melt and fascinate in equal measure. Taking a moment to chat with Mike DeLeon, he expressed gratitude and appreciation to the Cavaleras, “It’s been a total blast jamming alongside Max and the tribe. A true pioneer in metal music. Being a part of the new Soulfly album, writing and recording, has been a huge highlight for me thus far. Album thirteen for the band, first for me, lucky thirteen! To the future, let the Soulfly free!”

As if their immaculate touring lineup wasn’t impressive enough, SOULFLY also enlisted the talents of Dino Cazares of FEAR FACTORY, of whom Max and tribe have been long time friends and collaborators. Dino lent his machine gun picking hand to the aptly titled ‘No Pain = No Power’, and it is safe to say the combination of Max’s vocals, Zyon’s drumming and Dino’s riffs is something sure to please even the most extreme metal fans. The star-studded lineup does not end there though, Michael Amott of ARCH ENEMY played lead guitars on ‘Ghenna’, Todd Jones of NAILS sang on ‘Nihilist’ (a song dedicated to the one and only L.G. Petrov), Ben Cook from NO WARNING and Gabe Franco of UNTO OTHERS are also featured doing vocals on the album. It’s truly astounding how SOULFLY can venture into unknown territories alongside numerous all-star performers from around the world and come out with something as groundbreaking as CHAMA.

Each word delivered with unrestrained power, every strike of a drum a thunderclap through the ears, a torrential onslaught brought by the ever-shifting duo that is Max and Zyon Cavalera. His own anticipation obvious, Max himself stated, “I’m excited to present to longtime SOULFLY fans, a revival of our original sound. CHAMA is full of heavy tribal grooves and ripping fast riffs too. We’ve continued experimenting with different sounds while retaining the heart and soul that makes SOULFLY what it is. We hope this album brings veteran fans and new fans together to enjoy the new tracks. We hope to see you in the pit around the world.” Rest assured, Max, that this new album will have people blasting through the pits in no time.

On Thursday, Nov. 20th, 2025, the Community Center for the Performing Arts presents: Authority Zero & the Voodoo Glowskulls.

“Authority Zero has never been called “negative.” Even during a pandemic, they kept their collective chin up, put their heads down and wrote what could be called their career album. Released in June 2021, Authority Zero’s album “Ollie Ollie Oxen Free” takes a line from hide and seek to encourage fans to leave the COVID-19 depression behind and celebrate life.

During the pandemic, singer Jason DeVore saw families torn apart by political views and COVID-19. Now that the divide has somewhat subsided, it’s time to come out and be yourself again. “The phrasing in the title track stems from the idea of ‘come out, come out, wherever you are,’” says DeVore, who co-writes with bassist Michael Spero. “It encourages a focus on the positive side of 2020, while still maintaining awareness of the hardships and detriment of it all. People have been trapped within themselves, depressed inside of their houses and otherwise. We’ve been separated both politically and mentally between the left and right, which is very apparent. It’s a focus of come out, feel free and feel a sense of confidence to live with an unheavy heart and mind again.”

The title track rattles those cages with DeVore’s encouraging lyrics, the frenetic blur of Christopher Dalley’s urgent drumming and Spero’s bass, coupled with guitar licks true to the playing style of returning guitarist Brandon Landelius. With its updated sound, “Ollie Ollie Oxen Free” fits in with Authority Zero’s catalog, DeVore says. “It’s more of the times of 2020,” he says. “We really tried to focus more on the positive side of things that came from the pandemic, rather than the negative that came out of it. “We inflect lyrics and music in an uplifting manner. We wanted to shine a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Voodoo Glow Skulls were formed in 1988 by Eddie Casillas, Jorge Casillas, Jerry O’neill and Frank Casillas. After a few years of backyard party shows, cassette demos, 7” singles and first club gigs, they released their debut album “Who is, this is?” for Dr. Strange records in 1993, gaining the attention of Brett Gurewitz, owner of Epitaph records. The band then signed to Epitaph records and released four albums, starting in 1995 with Firme, their most successful album to date, then followed by Baile de los Locos, Band Geek Mafia and Symbolic.

The band began to tour worldwide with their first European tour in 1996 followed by Japan, Australia, Mexico, and South America.

The band has been featured on several of Epitaph’s Punk-O-Rama releases and has had music featured in video games, TV and movies.

The song “Shoot the Moon” from the band’s Firme album was used in the Pauly Shore movie Bio-Dome and the band’s version of “Used to Love Her” (originally written and recorded by Guns N’ Roses) is featured in the Mr. & Mrs. Smith soundtrack.

In 2002, Voodoo Glow Skulls signed to Victory Records. The band released three albums on the Victory label and continued to tour.

On January 18, 2012, the band released its self-produced ninth album, Break the Spell, through Smelvis Records.

In June, 2017, Frank Casillas announced his retirement from the band and was replaced by Efrem Schulz.

In May 2021, the band released Livin’ The Apocalypse with Efrem Schulz and continued to play shows.

In October 2024, Frank Casillas rejoined the band.

On Saturday, November 22nd, the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Emo Nite to the WOW Hall.

Not a band. Not DJs. We throw parties for the music we love! Sing along and dance to all of your favorite emo/pop-punk songs at the world famous Emo Nite!

As Rolling Stone observed a few years ago, “Emo Nite Vindicated the Scene.”

Since they threw their first party at an East L.A. dive bar, Morgan Freed and T.J. Petracca, and a dedicated crew of regular attendees, built Emo Nite into a phenomenon. Top-tier emo artists, old and new, curate playlists and perform, with guest lists boasting members of blink-182, All Time Low, Dashboard Confessional, The Maine, and Good Charlotte. Scene-friendly pop culture mavericks often participate, like past attendees Post Malone, Demi Lovato, Machine Gun Kelly, and Skrillex.

It’s all too easy to forget that before the first Emo Nite in December 2014, “emo” was a joke.

Somehow on its journey from a melodic post-hardcore subgenre, built on earnest emotional expression, to a mainstream moniker assigned to anything remotely angsty, “emo” became a dirty word. Despite the positive impact ushered in by waves of bands, from the crucial “Revolution Summer” and Sunny Day Real Estate through Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance, accepting “emo” as a dismissive designation or identity invited polite embarrassment and even scorn.

But Freed and Petracca grew up loving the music associated with emo and the people like them who similarly embraced outsider art and subculture, regardless of changing fashions or pretentious snobbery. Petracca told The New Yorker the idea behind the first Emo Nite celebration was to center a happy, communal experience on the music they once listened to when they were upset and alone.

“I sang Dashboard Confessional at karaoke at a friend’s birthday party and thought it was super fun to go out with friends and listen to music we actually liked,” recalls Petracca, who met Freed when the pair worked at a creative agency together. “Every other club in LA played EDM, Top 40, or hip-hop. We always found ourselves pre-gaming with emo and pop-punk music before we went out.”

Freed knew a bartender at the Short Stop in Echo Park and convinced him to let them throw a party on a random, rainy Tuesday. They invited friends via Facebook; double the bar’s capacity turned up. “We decided to see how far we could take it,” Petracca says. “‘Who would be the craziest guest?’ We invited Mark Hoppus, and he came! He did our first one at Echoplex, which was our third party ever.”

“There’s no disconnect between the artist and fan,” Freed points out. “I think that’s brought people closer to the music. It created a really strong sense of community, at a time when emo wasn’t ‘cool.’”

There may be a surprise acoustic set or even a full-band performance, but ultimately, it’s about the experience. Emo Nite turned a party into a community, reclaiming the spirit of how the scene began.

It’s now a recurring event thrown by dozens of friends in over 50 cities in the United States. Emo Nite runs full-day festivals and curates coveted performance spots at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Firefly, and more. Freed and Petracca launched successful clothing collaborations with brands like OBEY, Urban Outfitters, PLEASURES, The Hundreds, Rose in Good Faith, Market, and OWSLA.

“A larger promoter told us the shelf life of a club night in Los Angeles was two years,” Freed says, marveling at Emo Nite’s staying power. “A hundred percent of it is the people that go to it. This music makes people feel connected. The energy of it is so special. You get a group of people together who look different, but they have this thing in common. We started seeing friend groups form really, really quickly. People met their significant others at these events. The community really trusts each other.”

“Emo Nite LA has become an essential gathering point for fans of emo, pop-punk, and related styles,” Rolling Stone noted.

In October 2021, Emo Nite’s founders threw Emo Nite Vegas Vacation, a three-day event headlined by Avril Lavigne and Machine Gun Kelly, with Sleeping With Sirens, MOD SUN, 3OH!3, and more.

“What Emo Nite does better than any of their competitors is they make ‘emo culture’ feel both nostalgic and brand new,” The Summer Set’s Brian Logan Dales told Forbes, in a profile which included professions of love from members of Papa Roach, Underoath, and State Champs. “You can go to an Emo Nite with your best friends and sing along to old songs you grew up with, and at the same time, discover a brand-new artist who’s making music today because they grew up on that very same music as you. They’ve taken the emo of the past and helped it forge a new path for the future.”

As emo reenters popular culture with a blend of adoring nostalgia and optimistic forward- thinking, Emo Nite remains an authentic space to celebrate diversity, experience passionate catharsis, and champion authentic expression. Emo Nite isn’t a band or a DJ crew. It’s an idea, one as simple as the urge to throw a party for a beloved style of music. Often imitated but never truly duplicated, Emo Nite’s founders and supporters are fond of saying, “If you don’t see the grave, it ain’t our rave.”

“There’s a lot of ownership from our community of the event itself and the Emo Nite brand,” Petracca says. “It’s about breaking down that barrier of ‘Look at me, it’s all about me.’ No, it’s about us, together, in this room. It belongs to every single person that comes through the door.”

The co-founders continue to look ahead. “Emo Nite definitely impacted culture,” Freed notes. “But we have no plans to stop changing the way we view the evolution and expansion of the genre.”
