On Wednesday, October 1st, the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Mon Rovia to the WOW Hall.

I’m Mon, born in Monrovia, Liberia. My life can be summed up by being born into a civil war, escaping the life of a child soldier, and being rescued by the hands of missionaries. I spent a lot of my developmental years living in a variety of places, shaped by a number of life experiences. Layered on top of all of this is the assimilation I felt being a transracially adopted refugee. My music, in a nutshell, is a culmination of these experiences — blended with the empathy I feel for the experiences of others. The mission of my music is simple: to heal with others — with every nation and tongue, in due time.

Mon Rovîa is partnering with PLUS1 for his upcoming tour. $1.00 per ticket is to be added on top of every ticket sold, with the proceeds going to charity. Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to building and improving homes for families in need. As a local affiliate, Habitat for Humanity of Tennessee is actively responding to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. While immediate emergency response is ongoing, Habitat for Humanity’s primary role will be in the long-term recovery of disaster-stricken communities.

Standard work is the practice of setting, communicating, following, and improving standards. It is an integral aspect of continuous improvement, as it creates the baseline for improvement efforts to start from. Establishing standard work begins with process operators creating, clarifying, and sharing information about the most efficient method to perform a task that is currently known with everyone performing that process. From there, you can perform waste analysis and highlight areas of opportunity. Learn how standard work fits into LEAN, and how you cPrinan apply different LEAN tools to develop standard work in your organization as a baseline for improvement.

This Workshop will touch upon:
• Overview of what Standard Work is
• How does it help and the benefits?
• How do you implement it?
• Examples of standard work in practice
• How you can use standard work for improvement efforts

Q3 2025 Policy Forum Breakfast: The Oregon Approach to Wildfire

With the 2025 wildfire season largely behind us, Oregonians are once again grappling with the reality that fire has become one of the state’s most urgent and costly challenges. Each year we see more frequent, more destructive events—including megafires—that devastate communities, damage our landscapes, strain public resources, and cloud our skies with hazardous smoke. But why are we seeing this increase in severity? What role do climate conditions, land management practices, and state and federal policies play in driving or curbing these outcomes?

At our Q3 Policy Forum Breakfast, The Oregon Approach to Wildfire, the Eugene Chamber will convene three leading experts to explore these questions and more. Kyle Williams, Deputy Director of Fire Operations at the Oregon Department of Forestry; Travis Joseph, President and CEO of the American Forest Resource Council; and Travis Medema, Chief Deputy with the Oregon State Fire Marshal, will unpack the causes behind today’s wildfire crisis and the unique, coordinated strategies Oregon is using to respond. Attendees will learn how suppression tactics, resilient landscape management, and locally driven solutions are being deployed—and how Fire Adapted Communities, Community Wildfire Protection Plans, and policy decisions at every level influence the trajectory of fire risk and recovery.

This forum will offer a rare opportunity to better understand not only how Oregon fights wildfires, but why the stakes keep rising—and what can be done to change the outcome. It will provide business and community leaders with an informed perspective on how Oregon is safeguarding its forests, deploying resources effectively, and building fire-resilient communities.

Clay Fest is one of the nation’s finest all-ceramics shows. Over 90 Oregon ceramic artists will participate in this year’s show. This free event includes a gallery full of the artists’ finest work, live demonstrations of wheel throwing, hand building and related skills, a children’s clay area as well as a room full of artists booths. You can view and purchase sculptures, wall art, jewelry, tiles, and functional pottery for the home, garden and work.

Kick off the new year with solo performances by Lee Takasugi and Cris Cordero, members of local band Amor Fati. Lee, formerly of the LA-based band Visiting Violette, and Cordero, a multi-instrumentalist, blend indie pop, rock, and jazz to create eclectic sounds described as what happens when “Feist meets the Pretenders, shares a cab with Tori Amos, and has tea with Nina Simone.”

On Saturday, October 4th the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Cherry Poppin’ Daddies back to the WOW Hall.

In the past few years Cherry Poppin’ Daddies have become the kind of band that you would want to book if you were throwing a soiree at the Gatsby mansion. Penning elegant, lush, pitch perfect arrangements of much of the great American songbook, from Cole Porter to Frank Sinatra, the Daddies have surprised many- likely familiar with them from the early 90’s- whose limited exposure to the band undoubtedly consists of an image of spray painted vans careening across the US as an iconoclastic, misfit part of an already marginalized punk/ska scene.

In fact the Daddies have of late put together a number of excellent swing/ jazz sit down theatre type shows, each tailored to a different era of swing music: a “Jazz Age Lawn Party” consisting of roaring 20’s and Cotton Club Era material, a swanky “Live at the Sands” type tribute to the Rat Pack, and a World War 2 “Christmas Canteen” show that is part Tiki, part Benny Goodman and comes across like a radio broadcast from Guadalcanal circa 1942. The sheer craftsmanship and professional attention to detail of these performances have shed new light on this criminally underestimated band.

On top of being a show band nonpareil, the Daddies have an “oh by the way” double platinum ability to pen original material that, while influenced by a history of American popular music, is wholly modern lyrically, and itself stands up as classic. The 1997 release of Zoot Suit Riot set the bar for the neo-swing movement of the era in terms of originality, lyrical depth, and flat out musical sales.

When you see the Daddies perform their original material you are struck by the poetry and audacity of artistic vision. Whole stirring narratives are laid down in swinging couplets that evince dual meaning and social critique. Consider Master and Slave from 1990…

“Friends and Romans I’m your brother
I’m scratchin’ to hang on
The pursuit of happiness is just a carpetbaggers con
When a can of pork and beans could change my attitude
You wont give it up, but I could’ve been you
While the masters and the slaves scratch for pieces of the dream
For purple mountains majesty whatever the hell that means
They give up on each other and that’s the way they get ahead
But I can still see the stars
Through these red, white and blue prison bars”

…ok, this is not Cole Porter clever, but it’s not trying to be, it’s something striving to be new, to be challenging, courageous, and truthful. It’s not art simply designed to match the couch. What kind of band takes these kind of chances, both musically and thematically? The Daddies, that’s who.

Singer songwriter/ bandleader Steve Perry puts it this way, “Lately, by laying our hands on the great American songbook, we have been trying to fill in for audiences the historical back story of what inspires our original brand of Americana, because in essence that is what I consider us to be, an Americana band. But instead of taking mostly from a delta blues tradition- like many of the bands labeled “Americana”- we adhere mostly to a pre rock, pre mid 50’s, hot jazz and essentially Tin Pan Alley tradition. Then we attempt to deconstruct and détourne those set of tropes to fit modern themes, be that something like child abuse or say the opioid crisis. It’s unfortunate, but I believe it comforts modern audiences to see that we are able to play, in an orthodox fashion, material that is in the tradition, before they allow us to reach out for something unfamiliar, multifaceted, or god forbid anti-bourgeois in point of view like many of our originals are”

Sadly, over the past year the band has been laying low and playing a bit closer to home in order that Perry can be a caregiver to his wife, business partner, and video muse, Yvette “Cherry” Perry who was recently diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer. “This setback for our family has brought us closer to our fans, who have been so giving of their best wishes and helping with small donations to Yvette’s cancer care. We pledge to continue our advocacy work nationally toward earlier colorectal screening protocols and baseline cancer research so that this scourge that has been loosed on so many families like ours can be wiped out sooner rather than later.”

Proximity to home has allowed the Eugene, Oregon band to recently finish a new recording slated for release in late 2018 called Bigger Life. Perry says, “Bigger Life is 14 songs that will allow us to touch base with our punk/ ska audience. We will continue to play the all swing, classy theater type shows that are our bread and butter, but in addition, at some point in 2019 and 2020, we would like to book a few special tours and play occasional festivals where we crank it up and play only ska punk, hopefully joining forces with some of the bands that befriended us as we were all coming up in this business. This new record turned out really special and we are excited for people to get their ears on it.”

Where We Goin’?: Power of Place: A Multimedia Experience
Get ready for something bold, beautiful, and deeply resonant.

The Power of Place Roadshow isn’t your average film screening — it’s an experience. It’s culture. It’s community. It’s a celebration of excellence, belonging, and Black brilliance.

We will screen two powerful short films:

Dear Young Black Portland – run time 7 min
A visual letter from Ms. Sharon Gary-Smith, a beloved elder and former NAACP Portland President. Filmed by Devin Boss, and produced by Zoe Piliafas, this raw, deeply personal letter to the next generation, finds Gary-Smith the story of her family having their home stolen by the city through eminent domain as a child, and despite the loss continuing to chart new horizons in the sacred march for justice. Ms. Sharon refuses the role of gatekeeper. She opens doors to leaders of all ages because as she says – “she was once the one, who wanted to burn it all down.” She’s a fountain of wisdom, and her letter, penned with the help of award-winning writer Donovan Scribes, is not just a letter, but a rallying cry for all who demand a better future.

Devin Boss is on a quest. And he wants you to join him as he explores this simple question: Where We Goin’?

A millennial Black filmmaker and artist raised in the heart of the whitest city in America: Portland, OR, Boss ventures out to uncover the deeper truths that have shaped not just his city — but his very identity.

Boss invites us all along for the ride as he explores the work of Black creatives, cultural stewards and changemakers – past and present – snatching the narratives back, about community resilience and innovation as he examines his roots, to dream of what’s next for him, and all the future ancestors.

This episode finds Boss linking with multidisciplinary artist Intisar Abioto of Memphis, TN to discuss her groundbreaking curation of 69 Pacific Northwest creatives from the Diaspora at Oregon’s largest museum. Abioto and Boss also explore the artists’ Herculean 2022 effort to purchase the home of Portland NAACP co-founder, and all around badass Beatrice Morrow Cannady. The pair then connect with the folks powering the largest restorative re-development effort in the country, Albina Vision, as they rebuild the gentrifying epicenter of Portland’s vibrant Black community.

Elton Dan Seeks to Carry the Candle for
Experiencing the Live Concert Experience of Elton John

From his teenage years learning classical music on piano, Elton Dan Gasser always held Elton John as his greatest influence. Through decades of improvising and singing on thousands of stages from bars to cruises to amphitheaters – Dan thrives on playing live, and jumps at every gig offered him – Dan developed an ability to shine and to share that spotlight energy with the people who came to listen. He always added Elton John songs when the band was strong enough to pull it off. In 2015, with the popularity of tribute bands on the rise, Dan finally decided to do his destiny and lead a project paying homage to the greatest songbook in rock music. Thus Elton Dan and The Rocket Band was formed.

“Elton John is my all-time favorite artist and primary inspiration for playing music,” Elton Dan says. “There’s a lot to it. It’s not a challenge to play and sing, but the diversity from album to album is a rich tapestry of influences including blues and especially country music.” “I play his music every day, not only to get better also to be enriched and to learn more of his compositions.”

Experiencing the Live Concert Experience of Elton John

From his teenage years learning classical music on piano, Elton Dan Gasser always held Elton
John as his greatest influence. Through decades of improvising and singing on thousands of

stages from bars to cruises to amphitheaters – Dan thrives on playing live, and jumps at every gig
offered him – Dan developed an ability to shine and to share that spotlight energy with the people
who came to listen. He always added Elton John songs when the band was strong enough to pull
it off. In 2015, with the popularity of tribute bands on the rise, Dan finally decided to do his
destiny and lead a project paying homage to the greatest songbook in rock music. Thus Elton
Dan and The Rocket Band was formed.
“Elton John is my all-time favorite artist and primary inspiration for playing music,” Elton Dan
says. “There’s a lot to it. It’s not a challenge to play and sing, but the diversity from album to
album is a rich tapestry of influences including blues and especially country music.” “I play his
music every day, not only to get better also to be enriched and to learn more of his
compositions.”

For over a decade, Wordcrafters has hosted the bewitching Ghost Story Weekend. Created by the illustrious Elizabeth Engstrom, this generative writing retreat is a must for anyone who loves a good ghost story.

Picture this: four days at the Oregon Coast, crafting ghostly tales, and sharing them with fellow writers. You’ll enjoy good company, good chocolate, and good stories. From Thursday evening to Sunday morning, you’ll dive into the art of ghost story writing and emerge with a tale to tell of your own.

This fun, generative writing retreat takes place in Newport, Oregon at the newly renovated Hotel Sylvia, and welcomes writers of all levels.

Your Spirit Guide
Our Ghost Story spirit guide is Portland-based author Erick Mertz. He’ll inspire you with talks on ghost stories, story structure, and how to feed your monster. Throughout the weekend, Erick will be available for one-on-one guidance, sharing his story wisdom during meals and gatherings, while writing his own story alongside you.

A NOSTALGIC, LITERARY-THEMED RETREAT
Step into a space designed for reflection, where you can reconnect with yourself and rekindle old passions. The literary-themed rooms at Hotel Sylvia in Newport, Oregon, celebrate authors and genres that have shaped storytelling. Each room has its own character, filled with books and details that invite you to unplug and experience a different time, sparking your curiosity. Find comfort in a quiet corner where you can read, rest, and recharge.

What to expect
-Thursday evening: optional dinner (not included), speculative story discussion and instruction, and the official start of writing
-Friday: dedicated writing time, group meals, a craft talk, and small-group critique of your first draft.
-Saturday: dedicated writing time to work on your draft, group meals, and, in the evening, gathering around the fire to share your fantastical story.
-Sunday morning: light feedback session to help you further refine your tale.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned writer, you’ll find a supportive community here.

Participants stay in their own private room at the newly renovated Hotel Sylvia (unless you want to find a fellow writer to share with) and come to the Wordcrafters Haunted Library in the same location for meals, community, and writing time.

You’re welcome to join in as many (or as few) group activities as your possibly introverted writer heart desires.

Tuition: Includes all instruction, five meals (breakfast daily and lunch on Friday and Saturday, and plenty of treats. Register for your room separately. Rooms are $199 and up/night.

On Sunday, October 26th the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Karen Morgan, to the WOW Hall.

Karen Morgan is a former trial attorney who began her comedy career as a Finalist on
Nickelodeon Television’s Search for the Funniest Mom in America. She has now been
performing clean standup comedy nationwide in theaters and performing arts centers for
almost two decades.
Karen has 2 Dry Bar Comedy Specials: Go Dawgs (with millions of views on Facebook &
YouTube) and now Rub Some Dirt On It (Top 10 List of 2023). Her latest comedy album, Shiny
Happy People Laughing (named with special permission from REM), was recorded in her home
town of Athens, Georgia; it plays on 4 different channels on Sirius XM Radio. She has several
television appearances including The Talk on CBS, Gotham Comedy Live, and ads for Wal-Mart
and Zyrtec. She has also been featured in The Washington Post, Huff Post and The Insider.
Karen entertains audiences nationwide with her relatable observations of family and everyday

On Wednesday, October 29th the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Glitterfox to the WOW Hall.

Many bands chase fame through a triangulation of aspirational branding, music production software, and social

media prowess. But like the countless troubadours and punk rockers who’ve inspired them, the indie rock group

Glitterfox values authenticity over algorithm. Their ascent has been remarkably uncomplicated: Get in the van, play

unforgettable shows in town after town, make a bunch of friends. As Solange Igoa (they/ them), the band’s

effervescent frontperson, jokes, “We have always been driven by this kind of blind faith and delusional confidence.”

This has culminated in Glitterfox’s first full-length, decoder (out August 22, Jealous Butcher Records), a jubilant

explosion of tracks that synthesizes the two songwriters’ garage rock, new wave, southern Americana and dance

music influences into a sound that is singularly, inimitably Glitterfox.

So, what’s a Glitterfox? Technically, the word means nothing, but symbolically, it can represent anything: an antidote

to conventional art, a frontier of opportunity, the emancipation from everything that ails you. decoder’s tracks, in kind,

observe undulations of the human condition: the tug-of-war between fate and perseverance in the wistful singalong

“Passenger,” an affirmation of identity entwined in the twangy, spacious grunge-ballad “Change Me,” and “Polaroids,”

about guitarist Andrea Walker’s recent autism diagnosis, which oscillates between isolation and hope. “I was like,

‘What the fuck?’” Walker (they/them) explains. “I was completely blindsided, until everything made sense.”

Then there’s the deceivingly blissed-out “Wildfires,” about queer romance. Igoa and Walker have been a couple for

12 years, six of them married. However, while making this album, they amicably split. “We do this Fleetwood Mac

trick, where you take a really heavy topic but make it a dance song,” Igoa says. “A lot of Glitterfox music is about us

processing our shit, really heavy emotions.”

Because their musical connection is so profound, it has remained unaffected. “When I’m singing Andrea songs, I can

feel the emotions that they were feeling — we’re experiencing this life together, you know?” Igoa says. Adds Walker,

“I think about our connection musically. And it’s like, yeah, Solange is my voice.”

That powerful bond is palpable. Soon after relocating to their current hometown of Portland, Oregon, they met Chris

Funk (of The Decemberists), who’d become Glitterfox’s producer-manager after seeing them open for singersongwriter

Jerry Joseph. “I saw that show, and was like, ‘Who the fuck is this band?’” Funk says. “I instantly endeared

to them. There’s this once-in-a-lifetime voice and these killer songs. But there was also this dedication.” The band

used a grant they were awarded from MusicPortland to record three singles (“TV,” “Drive,” and “It’s Always Over”)

with him for Kill Rock Stars.

The origins of Glitterfox date back to 2012 in Long Beach, California, after Igoa turned up at one of Walker’s house

parties there. “Solange picked up my guitar and was singing,” Walker recalls. “The next day after the party, I said, ‘I

don’t know who that was, but I really, really want to be in a band with them.”

Walker — who started playing guitar at age 11, despite their distinctly un-musical family — had escaped a past of

gender trauma in a conservative North Carolina town and subsequent addiction, ultimately studying music therapy. “I

got to study classical guitar for four years,” they say. “And I became a beast on the guitar.” Working with everyone

from dementia patients to folks in a psychiatric facility (with whom they even formed an in-house rock band), Walker

explored “how music can transport you out of very bleak environments,” which can be heard in Glitterfox’s music

today. They ended up moving to Long Beach for work.

Igoa, meanwhile, grew up surrounded by farmland in Bakersfield, California, with a mom who owned a karaoke

business and a dad who played in a Basque band. They’d perform any chance they got: with their dad’s group, in the

school choir, at community musicals. They moved to Long Beach for a relationship that puttered out. “I was a busker

down on Second Street, and I would roller-skate down there with my guitar on my back,” Igoa says. “I would wait until

I made, like, 100 bucks, grab a Miller High Life and a cup of noodles, and then do it again the next day.”

After crossing paths at an open-mic night in a local coffee house, they soon became a couple. “Solange came over

after the open mic, and just kind of never left,” Walker says. A month later, they played their first show. Two-and-ahalf

years after that, they won Buskerfest, a battle-of-the-bands contest. “Solange was like, ‘Let’s get out of here.

Let’s be musicians.’ But I’d finally achieved something. I wasn’t a fuck up anymore. I’ve got a 401(k). I’ve got health

insurance,” Walker says. “But Buskerfest was this green light from the fucking universe.” So in 2015, they bought a

van and decided to take their music on the road.

They’d glance at a map, choose a town, and look up venues where they could play. “It was very DIY. I am relentless

and extremely organized,” Walker says, “and Solange is a big dreamer and totally fearless.” (Their breezy single

“Highway Forever” recalls this time.) They stopped everywhere from Sebastopol, California (where they busked

outside a crystal store, then got upgraded to a concert), to Asheville, North Carolina (playing for food at a kombucha

bar). After two years on the road, the duo decided to lay down roots in Portland, a favorite city of theirs — see

Glitterfox’s joyous anthem “Portland.” There, they quickly made friends with musician Eric Stalker, who’d learn the

bass just to join their band. Drummer Blaine Heinonen would join them a few years later, after his Americana group

disbanded.

They launched Portland’s indie-music festival Glitterfest in 2019, which doubled as their wedding reception. This has

since become a yearly event, and yet not bittersweet despite their personal split. “Solange is my best friend, my

family,” Walker says. “When I look back at photos of us, I don’t feel sad. I feel so proud of us.”

Their transparency in both life and art as they’ve shapeshifted is quite possibly Glitterfox’s greatest gift to us. “Of

course, I have a lot of feelings, you know? When Andrea and I first started playing music together, I was a completely

different person,” Igoa says. “I didn’t really know a lot about myself yet. Throughout our experiences together, I’ve felt

more comfortable in myself and how to be unapologetically myself. We both learned to be unapologetically

ourselves.”

Costumes are encouraged but not required; everyone is welcome to attend. Come prepared to connect with fellow business professionals and have fun, in a casual atmosphere. Our table sponsors have generously decorated tables with extravagant centerpieces that will be raffle prizes, and every guest will have a door prize at their place setting to take home!

Sweet N’ Juicy plays Party Music! They have backed Grammy winners, comedians, and local celebrities in Portland, Oregon! Individually members have been on Warped tour, MTV, High Times Magazine, co-written music with Blondie, and have been session musicians for dozens of records. Sweet n’ Juicy is working on their best music yet. Be ready to party!

Cello joe

There aren’t very many singing, rapping, beatboxing, cello players in the world. There’s a particularly funny and funky curious one you should remember and he goes by the name of CelloJoe.

Like most cello players, Joseph Abraham Tal Tien-Ru Chang Jr. Senior III esquire (or just Joey for short) started out as a classical cellist. A mild-mannered suburbanite kid from Los Altos, California, Joey began studying the cello at age ten.

University Avenue in Palo Alto California is a pretty ritzy strip. There’s also a sizeable homeless population. A homeless man named Carl would listen to Joey playing often. It was he who coined the moniker “Cello Joe.” Joey sang impromptu songs about the glaring disparities right before his eyes in the wealthy folks and the homeless. Socially conscious and politically active, Joey naturally wove concepts of social and earth justice into his lyrics.

Pitchwood

Conceived beside a campfire, Pitchwood has developed into a dynamic folk rock band. A collaboration between singer/songwriters Ana Bradley and Jeffrey Frank, Pitchwood blends tight harmonies and expressive songwriting to create a rich and original sound. With mutual passion for nature and the human condition, Frank and Bradley infuse these experiences into their artistry.
