Event Description:
Successful Aging Institute of Lane Community College proudly presents brand new non-credit gerontology classes. Priced for maximum participation by all, including those sharpening their skills to work with older adults. Students age 60+ qualify for a 25% tuition discount. Earn one continuing education credit (CEU) for every 10 hours of class. Come Yourself and Send Your Staff and Friends! All of the following are offered in Lane's Downtown Center (DTC), room 308. To register call 541-463-4634. • What’s So Great About Growing Older? (9 hours) Age is not a disability. Debunk the stereotypes and myths we learn from the media. By opening our minds to holistic views on aging, we can learn to celebrate the “elders” among us and actively pursue successful aging strategies in our own lives. This class will focus on the physical aspects of brain anatomy and function related to normal aging. Learn how we can continue to "grow our brains" as we age. Senior price $39. • Understanding & Coping with Dementia (8 hours) Fear and anxiety can be alleviated with information about normal age-related change in cognitive abilities, about reversible dementias that are short term, and about successful ways of coping with the challenges associated with cognitive change. Senior price $43. • Death, Dying & Bereavement (12 hrs) Our belief systems, rooted in history, religion, and cultural practices, affect how we cope with this most natural occurrence.
