The Eugene New Horizon Band, conducted by Sherry Cossey & Tim Prendergast, will present a FREE hour-long outdoor concert in the park, 6:30pm, Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Washburne Park in Eugene, 20th & Agate Streets in Eugene.
New Horizons Band is a part of a nationwide band program that was initiated in New York State several years ago for older adults who want to be part of a concert band. Every September, the group adds a "beginning" level group for people who always wanted to learn to play a band instrument but didn't or who played an instrument many, many years ago and want to pursue playing again! The 40 members include many folks who started in instrument late in life and many more who picked up their instrument again after a 30-40 year hiatus.
Pacific Winds Music established the Eugene New Horizons Band in 1997 and continues to sponsor it. The members rehearse on Wednesday nights throughout the school year at Kennedy Middle School. They present 4 or 5 concerts each year finishing each season with a concert at Washburne Park in June.
Sherry Cossey taught band at Kennedy Middle School for 32 years after receivng B.A. and M.A. degrees in Music at the University of Oregon and plays clarinet with the Eugene Symphonic Band.
