Maurie Jacobs grew up in Chicago with dreams of owning his own retail store. So, when he and his wife Sylvia moved to Eugene, Oregon as newlyweds—they embarked on a lifelong journey in furniture retailing with the opening of Sterling Furniture. Sterling was so well received, it soon became clear, that the city was ready for bigger and better things in furniture. So, the concept of a full line, top brand name home furnishings center was born—and took shape in the form of M.Jacobs fine furniture in downtown Eugene. With two floors and 50,000 square feet of showroom space—the M.Jacobs store drew customers from around the state, and provided services like complimentary decorating, easy parking, credit terms, and free statewide delivery. In the early 60’s, daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Mike Schwartz joined the business and were instrumental in the growth to the present 5-store family. First came the M.Jacobs full-line store in Bend, Oregon in 1980, which serves all of Central Oregon. Then came the first Gateway store, which is now Michael’s Leather & Oak—offering the largest selection of quality leather furniture in Oregon. Seeing the potential of regional freeway traffic in the Gateway area, the Schwartz’s opened Broyhill Home Collections—bringing one of the most popular names in fine home furnishings to an upscale store in 2000. Furniture Factory Outlet was added to provide factory closeouts and clearance priced merchandise, also in the Gateway area. And this year we have opened 3 new bedding stores called America’s Mattress. Today the M.Jacobs family of fine stores offers all price ranges, all styles, and the foremost names in furniture. Service continues to be a priority with free statewide delivery, in-home decorating consultation, instant credit and easy credit terms, and much more. And, Mike and Sheila Schwartz have continued Maurie and Sylvia Jacobs’ tradition of community involvement and dedication—along with their three daughters, two sons-in-law and five grandchildren. For more than 75 years, the M.Jacobs family of fine stores has led the way to beautiful homes in the northwest!
