Businesses Beware: There's Been an Increase in Commercial Burglaries

Eugene Police’s Property Crimes detectives have noticed a recent spike in commercial burglaries. Both southwest Eugene have experienced an uptick. In many cases, entry has been gained by breaking windows or forcing doors. Ryan Hershey, age 26, was recently arrested on six counts of Burglary 2, for break-ins at five different businesses (one of the businesses was victimized twice in two weeks).

There are steps that businesses can take to help them become a harder target to hit:

  • Ensure good quality deadbolt locks on all exterior doors and inside security doors
  • Windows should have secure locks and burglary resistant glass or film
  • Ensure good lighting inside and out, especially around doors, windows and other entry points
  • Keep plants and landscaping trimmed so as not to provide cover
  • Consider a security alarm system
  • Install video surveillance with remote alert features
  • Get a free security inspection by a crime prevention specialist

Eugene Police Crime Prevention is offering Eugene businesses free security inspections and recommendations. Eugene businesses can contact their crime prevention specialist for a free security inspection.
