Downtown Dog Ordinance Passes; Smoke-free Ordinance Fails Good afternoon, Thank you for all your support and advocacy thus far on working towards a safe and inviting downtown for all. The city council met today for a work session on both the proposed dog and smoking pilot ordinances. The Dog ordinance passed, 6-3 with councilors Claire Syrett, George Polling, Mike Clark, Chris Pryor, Greg Evans, and Alan Zelenka voting in favor. The Food for Lane County Dining Room and the adjacent space surrounding that building was cut out of the original footprint to minimize disruption of that important social service. The smoking ban failed, 3-6 with councilors Greg Evans, Claire Syrett and Alan Zelenka in favor and Mike Clark, Betty Taylor, George Poling, Emily Semple, Chris Pryor opposed. This is great progress and we are anxious to see whether this pilot ordinance makes downtown more inviting and improves public safety this summer. Moving forward, we know this will not be a “silver bullet” and will continue to convene downtown partners and interested parties to work on additional initiatives, projects, or ordinances that will help improve downtown. We will be engaging city councilors and the mayor in community conversations about downtown safety and will keep you all updated as we work towards a fuller package of solutions to improve downtown. We will keep you updated on future activities. Thank you for staying engaged and for your commitment to making downtown safe, healthy, inviting and prosperous for all of our community members.
