For Immediate Release Contact: Dave Hauser President & CEO 541.242.2350 Eugene ¾ Eugene’s City Manager Jon Ruiz has been selected to receive the prestigious Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 First Citizen Award. Ruiz will receive the award at the Eugene Chamber’s annual meeting on January 24, 2017 at 7:00 PM at the Hilton Eugene. More information The First Citizen Award is given annually to an individual who made notable contributions to our community through business and community service efforts. The Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce has presented the award each year since 1938. Ruiz was selected by a panel of former First Citizen honorees. Jon Ruiz has been Eugene’s City Manager since 2008. During his tenure in Eugene, Ruiz has effectively lead efforts to move the community forward in areas such as: Downtown Revitalization: Under Ruiz’s leadership, over $300 million dollars has been invested in downtown over the past six years across multiple fronts including a new Lane Community College downtown campus, housing, mixed use, and more. Additional projects such as high-speed fiber, a new innovation hub, improved public spaces and a permanent home for the Lane County Farmers Market are in the planning stages. Planning: Through the Envision Eugene process, Ruiz worked tirelessly to find alignment across a diverse set of community leaders in terms of how the community manages growth in a way that protects and enhances our quality of life and reflects the shared values of Eugeneans. After five years of community visioning, technical analysis, and Council direction, Eugene is ready to adopt its own urban growth boundary. Economic Development: Ruiz helped lead the development of a Regional Prosperity Economic Development Plan – a long-needed update for the region’s economic development strategy. Ruiz received a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Colorado in 1988 and holds a Bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University. In addition, he attended Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program in 1999 and the Rocky Mountain Program, Center for the Improvement of Public Management at the University of Colorado in 1995. Ruiz also received a Masters of Strategic Studies at the US Army War College in 2000. The college is the highest professional education available for military officers; the program prepares officers for leadership at the highest levels of military service.
