Event Description:
The husband-wife duo Kupaoa, from O'ahu, Hawai'i, will perform a free concert on the UO campus on Friday, January 26, at 7:30 pm. The event is sponsored by the UO Division of Equity and Inclusion and the Multicultural Center, and it will be hosted by student members of the UO Hawai'i Club and Kalapu Pasifika. The show will also include hula dancers from the Eugene hula school Na Pua O Hawai'i Nei. Kellen and Lihau Paik met as students at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa some 10 years ago. They have released 5 CDs of traditional and original music, and 3 additional limited edition CDs of traditional hula songs. Their recordings have won Na Hoku awards (the Hawaiian equivalent of Grammys) for Island Music Album of the Year, Best Hawaiian Language Performance, and Haku Mele (songwriting). Their band name, Kupaoa, means "suffused with fragrance" or "heady with scent" -- an appropriate description of their soothing, alluring and spicy music. The concert takes place in the new Redwood Auditorium, in the EMU, 1395 University St. on the UO campus.
