Event Description:
A lecture presentation by Mark Johnson, a Philip H. Knight Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Oregon. Many people believe that, in order for moral principles to be universally binding, they must have some transcendent source, either in divine authority or universal reason. However, recent cognitive science research on how people think suggests that our moral judgements are intuitive, mostly nonconscious appraisals grounded in habits and emotions. What’s left, then, of our cherished ideas about moral constraints, free will, and rational ethical deliberation? Are we left with moral relativism and no clear sense of right and wrong? Free and open to the public.
Directions:
UO Baker Downtown Center, on the corner of 10th and High Street
