Event Description:
Radio Redux offers up a delightful romantic comedy in its live radio theater adaptation of the 1934 hit film “It Happened One Night” at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10. Tickets, starting at $18, are available at the Hult Center box office (in person or by phone at 541-682-5000) or at radioreduxusa.com Shirley Andress makes her debut with Radio Redux as self-absorbed heiress Ellie Andrews, who, newly engaged to rakish pilot and fortune-hunter King Westley, runs away from her extremely wealthy father after he orders her to stay away from Westley. Steve Wehmeier portrays out-of-work newspaper reporter Peter Warne, who recognizes Ellie on a Greyhound bus and gives her an ultimatum: If she will give him an exclusive on her story, he will help her escape her father’s grasp so she can reunite with Westley. Though initially they can’t stand each other (she’s spoiled, he’s a lout), as Ellie and Peter go through several adventures together they begin to fall in love. “We’re excited to revive what’s arguably the greatest screwball comedy in film history not just because it’s a lot of fun but because it represents a significant genre that’s rarely experienced anymore,” says Radio Redux founder and producer Fred Crafts. “It’s a dynamite road trip adventure, loaded with steamy romance — for the 1930s, that is — and close calls. It’s a ‘will-they, won’t-they’ potboiler.” Radio Redux, which recreates historic radio programs from the 1930s-60s, is performing the Lux Radio version of “It Happened One Night,” originally broadcast in 1939. The troupe, which features live sound effects, also performs whimsical commercials with live music by the Jewel Tones. Based on the 1934 Oscar-winning movie starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, this pioneering screwball comedy’s surprising situations and clever gags changed the course of film history. When they have to hitchhike, Peter fails to draw attention until Ellie displays a shapely leg to the next driver, who screeches to a halt in what is now an oft-repeated cliché that originated with this film. In the course of their journey they stay in motels, a scandalous concept for an unmarried man and woman made hilarious when Peter drapes bedspreads over clotheslines rigged between the (of course) twin beds. The movie was released at the tail end of Hollywood’s “Pre-Code” era, so while the film was censored it was still slightly wicked for the era — Clark Gable removes his shirt! — but mild by today’s standards. “The movie would easily capture a G rating under today’s criteria,” Crafts says. “That fits perfectly into what Radio Redux does, which is always good, clean fun ideal for audiences of all ages.” Sound effects artists for the show are Emerson Malone and Cameron Walker. Musical commercials and bridges are by the Jewel Tones. Other actors in “It Happened One Night” include Bill Barrett, Achilles Massahos, Kim Donahey, Stanley Coleman, Al Villanueva, Don Aday, Cameron Walker and Jennifer Sellers.
