Event Description:
New GeoTour Edition Takes Treasure Hunters Along Territorial Highway's Scenic Countryside Eugene, Ore. - The region’s rural landscape, dotted with vineyards, farms, historic bridges and small town charm, will be the highlight of the Eugene, Cascades & Coast GeoTour’s latest edition. Named the Territorial Highway Edition, the route will officially launch on Saturday, March 15 in Cottage Grove. Travel Lane County will welcome geocachers and first-time treasure hunters to explore and track down the 36 cache sites positioned along an estimated 92-mile loop. The official launch will be held between 9 and 11 a.m. at the Village Green Resort, located at 725 Row River Rd. Participants can pick up their GeoTour passports and talk with experts about the new edition, as well as other legs of the tour. While kicking off in Cottage Grove, the loop will also lead geocachers to Veneta, Junction City, Coburg and Creswell, celebrating the region’s beautiful countryside and significant historic landmarks. Encompassing parts of the Applegate National Historic Trail and Oregon's trunk road system, the route will take in byways once considered major thoroughfares first traversed by pioneer wagons and stagecoaches. Earlier launched routes include the McKenzie River, Florence and Oakridge/Westfir editions, each with a distinct passport and geocoin. The popular geocoins, earned when cachers find at least 24 sites within each leg, have been tailor-made to reflect Oregon and Lane County’s attributes. The latest is a glass coin produced by Cornerstone Glass based in Eugene. Cachers who complete the Territorial Highway edition during the launch weekend can retrieve their glass geocoin at the Daffodil Festival in Junction City. Since the launch of the first edition of the Eugene, Cascades & Coast GeoTour, more than 3,000 people have participated, logging their finds and feedback on geocaching.com. For more information, visit http://www.eugenecascadescoast.org/geocaching/. Specific details of the latest edition will be posted on March 15 when the Territorial Highway Edition officially launches. Travel Lane County is a private, nonprofit association dedicated to economic development through visitor spending. In 2012, visitors to Lane County generated more than $555 million in spending for Lane County's economy. Travel Lane County is funded by room tax paid by visitors using lodging facilities and campgrounds.
