Event Description:
Eugene’s biggest downtown party is back with a myriad of family friendly entertainment options. The Eugene Celebration, an entertainment rite of late summer for Eugene residents of all ages, will celebrate 30 years with more than a dozen performance stages, fine art, film, food, performance art, parades and family friendly activities to put a smile on everyone’s face. Eugene’s annual celebration of civic pride begins Friday, Aug. 24 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 26. “The Eugene Celebration is a fun and safe way for us to bring thousands of community members together for the common good,” said Cami White, event manager for the Eugene Celebration. “It’s a way for us to celebrate our beautiful city and demonstrate how proud we are to be Eugeneans.” Returning with the theme, “Raise the Roof,” the downtown festival will feature a variety of musical acts and entertainment, film festival, Celebration Parade, Community Causeway Sustainability Village, Pet Parade, Car Show, and an amazing collection of local food and craft vendors. The annual Celebration Parade, an event highlight, includes everything from traditional marching bands and floats to daredevil roller skaters and colorfully costumed samba dancers. The popular parade gives Eugene residents a chance to celebrate their diversity and put it all out on display. Free to all, the parade starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 18th Avenue and High Street. It will continue north until turning west onto E. 11th Avenue, followed by a left turn onto Pearl Street. The parade will continue south on Pearl Street, and end at E. 19th Avenue. A map of the parade route is available online. The KidZone, which offers family friendly entertainment for kids, will be at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and Willamette Street. It will feature everything from magic to mini-golf to musical instrument making, along with arts, crafts, dance, music, gymnastics and science. As always, KidZone is free to kids of all ages! Beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, the Eugene Celebration Film Fest kicks off with a screening of “Independents Day” at the Film Zone in the McDonald Theatre located at 10th Avenue and Willamette Street. A Celebration favorite, the weekend film festival offers attendees a chance to view fun films and provides a glimpse into artistic expression through cinematography. Daily admission to the Celebration is $10 in advance and $15 at the gate for the three-day event; admission for Sunday only is $8 at the gate. The event is free for children ages 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at Safeway TicketsWest locations and online at TicketsWest.com (service charge applies. Tickets are also available at Lane Transit District Downtown Station, the University of Oregon Bookstore, Footwise, Harlequin Beads & Jewelry, Jerry’s Home Improvement Center and Northwest Community Credit Union locations. The Raise the Roof theme of the Celebration reflects the continued three-way partnership between the Eugene Celebration, Northwest Community Credit Union (NWCU) and Habitat for Humanity. The partnership aims to raise enough money to fund construction of two homes in the Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity service area. The first of those homes was completed in 2011. Event officials invite attendees to celebrate the greater Eugene community by “giving back and gettin’ down.” For more information on this year’s events and activities, visit http://eugenecelebration.com/index.html. About the Eugene Celebration The Eugene Celebration, the southern Willamette Valley’s largest and most celebrated civic event, includes the Celebration Parade, and indoor and outdoor performance stages in downtown Eugene. Stages are linked by street performers, food vendors, beverage gardens, a marketplace, a Community Causeway showcasing up to 100 nonprofit groups, an extensive KidZone area, Sustainability Village, the Pet Stroll, a film festival and much more. Downtown merchants and venues also participate in special promotions and indoor performances throughout the weekend. The event attracts an average of 20,000 participants a day. The Eugene Celebration was created in 1983 by the City of Eugene to bring the community together for three days of music and fun. In 1998, Downtown Events Management, Inc. (DEMI) was launched to manage the Celebration. DEMI is registered with the State of Oregon as a domestic nonprofit corporation, managed by an all-volunteer board of directors. The Celebration is produced and funded through grants, business sponsorships, private contributions, admissions fees, in-kind donations and volunteer support. For the fourth consecutive year, the Eugene Celebration will be produced by Kesey Enterprises Inc., owner and operator of the McDonald Theatre and manager and operator of the city of Eugene’s Cuthbert Amphitheater. Applications for vendors, parade entrants and volunteers are available online at http://www.eugenecelebration.com.
