Event Description:
Members of Oregon Bach Collegium, the Byrdsong viol consort and Gamelan Sari Pandhawa join forces to recreate a musical exchange recounted in “The World Encompassed”, the published account (1621) of Sir Francis Drake’s monumental circumnavigation on his ship The Golden Hind. When Drake left Plymouth England in 1578, his band of soldiers, sailors and “gentleman adventurers” included, in addition to the gentlemen’s lutes and ships' trumpeters, four viol players. Wherever they made landfall his musicians entertained the local indigenous dignitaries, but only in Java was the entertainment reciprocated: Drake and his crew were delighted when, the day after entertaining the Javanese King, he returned aboard with his court gamelan and presented a concert of exotic music there on the deck of the Golden Hind. According to the journal, the music was “of a very strange kind, yet the sound was pleasant and delightful”. Join us for an exploration of this unique musical encounter! Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 students.
Directions:
Our concert will take place at United Lutheran Church in Eugene (at the corner of 22nd Ave. and Washington).
