Event Description:
This year we celebrate our holiday “Through the eyes of a child…” Saturday, December 3rd at the new parade start time of 1 PM. Join all of us for the 2011 parade! “Through the eyes of a child…” The Springfield Community Parade Corporation and Presenting Sponsor, Evergreen Land Title Company are now accepting entries for the 59th Annual Parade – Entry Deadline November 15th. The 2011 Grand Marshal is Chief Jerry Smith, Police Chief to our own Springfield Police Department. Chief Smith has been a long time participant in the parade usually in or walking alongside the Antique Police car that starts the annual parade. Nearly 100 entries and thousands of viewers along the parade route will join in the parade traditionally known as "the oldest & coldest" in Oregon. Trophies will be given to the best entry in each category plus an overall best theme entry will win the Golden Wreath. Like whimsy and fun? The Tuxedo Award for best portrayal of Whimsy may be yours. We have cars, bands, horses and other animals, commercial floats, local Firehouse Engines, non-commercial community floats, local scout troops and other youth groups, local activity Clubs, Church Groups, Volunteer Organizations, and Community Businesses and Business Groups, Service Groups, to name a few. The parade begins at Olympic Blvd and 21st Street, proceeds west to Mohawk, south to 14th and Main Streets (Reviewing Stand), and then west on Main Street to end just north of Main Street on Pioneer Parkway. At Noon on parade day, the Tuba Carol Concert will be held at the Wildish Theatre, sponsored by Sanipac. This is a new concert time and place this year, an hour earlier than previous years. Admission is still free – seating is first come, first served. During the week before the parade, watch for the decorated windows! Merchants along the parade route will participate in the 5th Annual Window Decorating Contest, sponsored by Springfield Times. This year, in conjunction with the parade’s theme, the window entries will be judged by a group of Springfield students. Deadline for window entries is November 25 – judging will be November 28th. Be a part of the tradition - Springfield's Annual Parade Festivities! Contact: www.springfieldchristmasparade.org ~ call 541.988.0955.
