Event Description:
Eugene sizzles! Community members and visitors are invited to spend their summer outside enjoying this unique series of outdoor concerts, movies, performances, breakfasts at bike bridges, skate competitions and dancing. Enjoy open air movies in our local parks and bring a picnic to the much-loved Sunday afternoon concerts in Washburne Park. Head downtown on Wednesday evenings to take part in everything from Circus Circus! for families, and open air dancing, to a fashion show hosted by local artists. Details: All events are family-friendly. Most events are free; downtown events are free with donation of one can of food to Relief Nursery; Skate Competitions $3. Bring chairs to downtown; blankets, lawn chairs and picnics to the parks. No glass containers, alcohol, smoking, or pets. All movies will have subtitles for the hearing impaired. Subject to change or cancellation due to weather. Sun, 8/1 @ 6:30 p.m. Washburne Park, Agate & 20th. Springfield Concert Band. Concert band arrangements of pops, show tunes, marches & more. Wed, 8/4 @ 6:00 p.m. Downtown at Broadway Plaza. Circus Circus! A fun evening for all! A circus on the street will provide pure entertainment by a variety of performers, including gymnasts, fire dancers, jugglers, and martial artists. Then you are invited to join in the fun at Circus Jam, an open stage for you and local performance groups to show off with your circus skills! In addition to these performance events, try your hand at circus arts including juggling, hoola-hoops, diablo’s, and poi spinning. Be dazzled, participate, watch and learn -- a night of pure fun! Eugene Police Crime Prevention Experts will be on hand at every downtown event with the latest tips and programs for you and your family. Imagination Station: Let your creativity flow at M.E.C.C.A’s imagination station! At 6:00 p.m. at every Summer in the City -- Downtown event, be a part of the magic and create your own themed art projects: stickers, hats out of paper bags, headbands, masks, shoe art, face painting and much more! Fri, 8/6 @ 7:30 p.m. Downtown in the Atrium Bldg, 10th & Olive. No Shame Theatre. One theatre. Five minutes. Three rules: 1. All pieces must be original. 2. No breaking anything, including the law. 3. Five minutes and the lights go out. Each show is composed of the first fifteen acts to sign up at 7:30. Welcoming skits, poetry, dancing, monologues, music, and experimental. Bring your friends and bring an act -- or there's no shame in just watching. Sat, 8/7 @ 9:00-ish p.m. Bethel Community Park, along Legacy Street. Shark Tale. Rated PG, 90 minutes, with Spanish sub-titles. Sun, 8/8 @ 6:30 p.m. Washburne Park, Agate & 20th. Oregon Tuba Ensemble. Familiar tunes & classical melodies performed entirely on tubas. Wed, 8/11 @ 6:00 p.m. Downtown at Broadway Plaza. Open Studio on Broadway. Ever wonder how art happens? Open Studio on Broadway is an evening where the beauty and magic of the arts come alive. Broadway Plaza will transform into a community studio for a perfect mixture of arts and outdoors. This evening will feature “live art” - artists making art on the spot and “participatory art” where YOU have an opportunity to explore your inner artist. A jazz trio will provide light background music while you provide the creative expression! Also at this event: Cut your chances of becoming a property or person crime victim. Thu, 8/12 @ 6:30 p.m. Maurie Jacobs Park, park at Valley River Center or bike. Taste. Taste is funky, sweet and smooth guitar-driven R&B. A four-piece band from Eugene, they perform covers of classic songs from artists such as Stevie Wonder and Al Green, as well as plenty of fresh originals. Taste will make you want to dance and fall in love. Fri, 8/13 @ 9:00-ish p.m. Trainsong Park, Bell Ave. Back to the Future. Rated PG, 116 minutes Sun, 8/15 @ 6:30 p.m. Washburne Park, Agate & 20th. Oregon Brass Society. Genuine British-style brass band. Wed, 8/18 @ 6:00 p.m. Downtown at Broadway Plaza. Runway Masquerade. An evening of sophistication and great art! Back by popular demand, Eugene’s fashion artists shine bright once again at this year’s Runway Masquerade, a fantastic event, starting at approx. 8:30 p.m.! This show of Eugene’s fashion scene on the runway, along with the vendor booths, brings out the best in Broadway Plaza! This exciting event kicks off at 6:00 p.m. with top notch stylists creating master works of art with hair! Local artists will be cutting, spraying, sculpting and bending right before your eyes, crafting unique hair styles and sculptures right on the runway. Traditional concert band repertoire including pops, marches & more. Wed, 8/25 @ 6:00 p.m. Downtown at Broadway Plaza. KOOL 99.1 Dance Party & Theatre Teaser. Dance the night away with KOOL 99.1 DJ Barry McGuire! An evening of dancing and singing along to every song! At 6:00 pm, the evening starts off with short local theatre performances, including Lord Leebrick Theatre Company and Fred Crafts’ Radio REDUX. Fri, 8/27 @ 9:00-ish p.m. Petersen Barn Center, 870 Berntzen Road. Una Película de Huevos. Rated G, 90 minutes Sat, 8/28 @ 5:00 p.m. Willamalane Skatepark, Springfield. End of Summer Skate Competition. All ages, all abilities! Register @ 4 p.m., $3, parent must register 18 & under. Join us for hot dogs, prizes and music. Helmets required at all times. 100% of proceeds will go to Skaters for Eugene Skateparks to fund the Washington-Jefferson Skate Park. Sun, 8/29 @ 6:30 pm. Washburne Park, Agate & 20th. Junction City Polka Band. Grab a partner and dance the Polka!
