Event Description:
Former players of the nationally-famed All American Red Heads women’s basketball team will return to the local area for the first time in 40 years as they reunite and suit up for one last game at this year’s FIMBA Pan-American Maxibasketball Championships July 2-10. Team members will take part in a special exhibition game in Springfield and a reunion celebration in Cottage Grove, as they are honored for their legacy to women’s basketball. Among the first professional women's basketball teams in the U.S., the Red Heads traveled across the country from 1936 to 1986 entertaining audiences with their skillful playing, athletic ability and amusing trick shots. Playing by men’s rules, against men’s team, the Red Heads changed the face of women basketball winning 70 percent of their games, while becoming role models for many young women in the process. During the masters-level, Pan-American Championship games, the Red Heads will take on the alumni of the NBA Portland Trail Blazers on July 9 at Springfield High School in a half-time exhibition during the women’s finals. The team will also take part in reunion activities July 8-10 at the Village Green Resort in Cottage Grove, where additional community festivities are currently being planned in this twice-decorated All-American City. The FIMBA president and the local organizing committee invited the team to come to the championships. The event will draw men’s and women’s masters-level teams from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America and Central America to the Eugene, Springfield and Cottage Grove area. Upwards of 80 teams are expected to participate, drawing about 1,000 players and coaches from more than 20 countries. Players range in age range from 30 to 75 plus. Travel Lane County estimates the event will generate close to $1.6 million in economic impact for local communities. For more information about the Red Heads, contact Tammy Moore, All American Red Heads Representative, at tmh42@cox.net; or Jim Gilroy, Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, at (541) 942-2411 or jim@cgchamber.com. For additional information about the Pan-American Maxibasketball Championships, contact Kayla Krempley, at Travel Lane County, at (541) 484-5307 or visit www.MaxibasketballEugene2010.com.
