Event Description:
Bring your fossils, rocks, bones and artifacts. Also your antiques, basketry and textiles. Find out about them and share them with others at "Identification Day" April 17 at the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History. Mystery items of all sorts are welcome at the 21st annual event, sponsored by the UO museum in association with Lane County Historical Museum and KLCC FM. Admission is $3 per person, $8 for families, and free for MNCH members. Whether it's a favorite rock collected on a hike, a fossil that's been sitting on a shelf for years, a basket purchased at a yard sale or a family antique, visitors can bring items to the museum to share with others and be evaluated by experts. Specialists from the fields of paleontology, geology, archaeology, basketry and antiques will be available to discuss the treasures and provide details beyond family lore. No appraisals will be provided at the event. Visitors will also be able to watch various artist demonstrations, and at 2 p.m., can take a guided tour of the museum's native plant exhibit, which includes special plants used to create the basketry shown in the "Oregon: Where Past is Present" exhibit. Visitors may also explore the exhibits "PaleoLab - Oregon's Past Revealed: Whales of Deep Time" and "How Water Speaks to Us - Photographs by Shirley Collins," as well as visit Past & Presents, the museum store.
