Event Description:
The fourth annual Local Food Connection is a networking event designed to connect local farmers, ranchers, and fishers with food buyers of all types to provide new business opportunities and encourage consumption of locally grown foods. The event is hosted by Cascade Pacific Resource Conservation & Development and is co-sponsored by Eugene Water & Electric Board, Oregon Tilth, and Lane Community College Center for Meeting and Learning. The target audience for this conference includes farmers, ranchers, fishers and food producers and processors of all types as well as food buyers including restaurants, grocery stores, retirement communities, school districts, colleges, universities and distributors. Local food enthusiasts from the general public are welcome to attend as well! The event costs $20 and includes a lunch made from locally produced foods from the Willamette Valley and mid-Oregon coast. The keynote address will come from Ms. Ann Wright, Deputy Undersecretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs of the USDA who will be discussing the recently launched "Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food" Campaign. The event will also offer 12 workshops covering a wide range topics including: --Understanding food certifications --An introduction to Food Hub (the new online tool to connect growers and buyers developed by Ecotrust) --Energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities for farms and rural businesses --Energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities for urban businesses --Local Food Connection 101 - Understanding Buyer Needs --How to get your product on a grocery store shelf --A hands-on demonstration of butchering a lamb to use all cuts of meat --Social Media Bootcamp --Basics of Lean Enterprise and Food Safety for the Food Industry --Growing and selling beans and grains in the Willamette Valley --The latest news about GMOs: why you should be concerned and what you can do about it!
