Event Description:
The major stars and events will include: • Helmuth Rilling, founding artistic director, returning to lead opening weekend performances of Verdi’s Requiem in Eugene and Portland; Mendelssohn’s Elijah (also in both cities); and Bach’s Lutheran Masses in the Discovery Series of lecture-concerts. • Thomas Quasthoff, the bass-baritone who made his American debut at the OBF in 1995, as artist-in-residence for 10 days. He’ll lead a master class, perform a solo recital of Schubert’s Schöne Mullerin song cycle (accompanied by Jeffrey Kahane in Silva Concert Hall), and sing the title role in both performances of Elijah. • Bobby McFerrin, who will work and perform with the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy. • Jamie Bernstein, daughter of Leonard Bernstein and an accomplished performer in her own right, who will host a “Bernstein on Broadway” gala and present her acclaimed Bernstein Beat world music programs for kids, in English and Spanish performances. • Monica Huggett and the Portland Baroque Orchestra, who will perform Bach’s Orchestral Suites in Festival concerts in Ashland, Bend, and Eugene. • An all-star fundraising gala with Quasthoff, McFerrin, Kahane, Bernstein, pianists Robert Levin and Ya Fei Chuang, and the OBF Chorus and Orchestra. Friday, June 25 at 7:30 pm. Oregon Bach Festival presents Verdi Requiem. Silva Hall. Tix: Over the counter sales begin May 11. Thrilling and potent at every turn, the Requiem is the greatest concert work by the master composer of Aida, Otello, and Falstaff. In Verdi's hands, the age-eternal Mass of the Dead becomes a drama of powerful immediacy: prayerful, passionate, poignant, and exultant. With Helmuth Rilling's masterful direction of stellar soloists and full chorus and orchestra, you'll feel every measure of emotion from this glorious masterwork.
